BMW Assist is the emergency phone system and driver assistant service. It used to be about £120 a year. I got it with my 2005 X5 only to discover that it only worked with Vodafone or O2 - who weren't my providers - so the cost was refunded. Later 2005 build cars have 'telematics' which uses a SIM built into the car. If you have that then it's network transparent, you just pay the annual sub. It may also automatically trigger an emergency call in the event of an accident. The later system certainly does.

The latest cars also have a 'guarded' SOS button (flip the cover down and push the orange button!) which when pressed does all sorts of things including sending GPS data to BMW. I think it does other things too, but happily does not eject you...

I pressed the SOS button when the car broke down as thought it was a direct line to BMW assistance. It actually dialed 999 which I obviously apologised to the operator for and she cancelled the call down.

20 mins later their was a knock at the door and it was the police " hi sir, it's a strange one but your car is calling us for help"

We both had a laugh because it was 1st time they had that.

It's kind of like knight rider technology except for kit never broke down!

The car salesman also told me that if your in an accident BMW assist can see what kind of damage of damage has been done and if it's minor they ring you and if it's bad they send help ASAP.

Not sure how much I believe the last bit

He's right as long as you have the Telematics version which was installed from sometime in 2005. My Dec '04 build didn't have it, but our Jul '05 E46 does. It was a later version of the TCU that included the system.
