dgm, do you have the part number for the wiring loom.
[/quote]
The 2.5m connection cable is 7 607 622 010-001, £34.99 delivered from Blaupunkt Direct. 2.5m is all you'll need if you've got the radio in the boot. The BMW adapter cable (for 05/01 X5's onwards) is 7 607 622 016-001, £29.99 from Blaupunkt Direct. You need both.

They are one and the same I believe. Search under BM53 or BM54 repair.

Don't give up, the amp is part of the radio module which can be either model BM53 or BM54 depending on the age of your car. You need to have it replaced or repaired is what I'm saying. It's a common fault, google it.

Re: ice help
I had my BM54 repaired by http://www.cartronics.co.uk/ very reputable company deals in alot of high end cars and have repaired a hell of alot of BM54's cost was £175 (ouch) working fine since June 2011.
Regards upgrade the best value would be:
1 - get a crossover and a 1" tweeter from eBay (cut the wire that goes to the door mid feed to crossover, then feed the mid to the existing speaker and the tweeter to the window panel triangle where the tweeter will just pop in) -- £25-40 approx'ish
2 - buy a sub, enclosure and amp again eBay nice JL Audio bundle would be good - There a guide on how to splice into the rear speaker wires to feed to the amp -- £100-whatever you like
3 - I would probably just unplug the mids in the dash, they are seriously bad. http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/ do a direct replacement prob is it USA based and the charge $109 for the speakers then shipping on top (amazing difference), or if you can find something else better to go in there. An alternative to Number 1 is not to do No 1 and just buy a tweeter with inline crossover and just put the tweeter there, fitting you will have to figure whats best (damn cheap option that) - £10-30
Bet your confused now
