A new E70? That means an EOS 1DS MkIII at least

I'm a Nikon man, must admit (and it is a personal preference and nothing more!) that I prefer the ergonomics of the Nikon, and just the way it does things. There is no doubt though that there is very little to choose between them - Canon tends to be a bit quicker off the mark with most things, but then occasionally Nikon trumps them. Canon also tends to have a better choice of Glass to stick on the front - with Nikon you either get cheap or really expensive - no middle ground.

The other thing to consider is how experienced you are in photography in general (have you used a film SLR in the past?) - if you are not that experienced then there might be some mileage in you getting a slightly lower spec camera as these tend to be a bit easier to use (i.e. Canon Rebel or Nikon D3000/D3100). I'm shooting a Nikon D80 at the moment, but that is going to get replaced once the rumoured D7000 hits the market place.

Overall though the most important investment when it comes to a DSLR is your time, take the time to learn to use it properly - spending thousands on expensive cameras does not make you a good photographer, time does!

Oh and bear in mind - DSLR photography often has a knock on effect on your computer - Image processing needs a fast computer and LOTS of storage!

Amen to that too!!

I've been taking photos for decades and have probably only got a few hundred or so that I would say I'm really happy with. I still make the occasional howler even now and kick myself!!

Digital imaging has the advantage that you can make mistakes and just delete them rather than having the negatives/slides haunt you. Some will say that makes people poorer photographers as you can just photoshop out the errors and never learn from them.

You'll also need to factor in some image editing software and a decent photo printer as well (at least they're cheap enough now).

Buy the 5D trade for my used d80 and the story will be more plausible. Come to think of it let's trade the e70 and 53 I doubt she'll notice ;-)

You won't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon and Sony is not bad either. Just stick to any of those, and don't buy cheap lenses and you will be fine :)

Interesting - where did you manage to get a Pioneer from? They have been out of production for some time now.
