First incident,.. heart sunk

Post by jonnyivy » Sun Apr 15, 2012 10:19 am

Got up yesterday morning to find some git had drove too close to the X5 and took a good swipe at the drivers door mirror !
Felt hellish,.. not had my pride that long,.. and first thought was how expensive this might be.
Don't know the full damage yet as I haven't had time to dismantle it to look inside the casing as I had to work all day.
I did find the black casing rim which goes round the inside area,.. the glass is obviously broken but the working of the up/down/left/right functions are still okay. The problem seems to be the actual mounting itself,.. it seems kinda wobbly,.. not too wobbly,.. but enough to have the mirror sway about while driving. It still folds in too ( which I guess should have been done in the first place ) Just wondering if there is some way to tighten up this loose neck ? It did break-away when hit and fold forwards but seems like its done some damage to that area .
Any input would help,

cheers,

Gutted for you. I came back to mine the other day to find someone had rammed my front bumper with a low height trolley in B & Q... :x  And then they hadn't stopped to own up either. Bastids!

I hope you're sitting down? You probably want to look on eBay as a complete unit from BMW is going to be in the range of £700 I think. I know I had both mine changed under warranty and the Dealer said new units were about that much. They changed the mirrors due to fold motor issues.

Hi,

Gutted for you - that also happened to mine.

I could find no fix so ended up pushing a small piece of corrugated cardboard down the back!! Not ideal but it never showed ans worked too.

Then when someone drove into me I claimed for the mirror too!!!!!

Here's the up-date;
Got a chance to investigate the bust mirror earlier and my worry was that the mounting had been broken around the neck some where as the whole unit was wobbling. As it was forced forward with the impact I pulled it back to its sitting position. Well, I now have taken the broken glass off after removing the cowling and then pulled it even further back past its resting 'notch'. When I pulled it back forward again, hey presto, it clicked back into a more positive 'notch' and now it doesn't wobble anymore !!
Now for the replacing of the glass part.
I see there are 2 sets of wires behind the glass,.. one pair connects to a set of small spades up in the top corner and the other pair are connected to a snap connector. Will this be for the heating element ? and the other one (spades) for the auto-dimming ?
I see there is some copies for sale on ebay, but dont have the auto-dimming.
Will these just plug-in and go ??

Sorry to hear this, wanc#%rs!

Inside is the motor that will run on some steel cogs to create the track for folding. Folding in sounds ok but one or two cogs sound like they've been broken inside thanks to the impact.

New unit, bought painted, fitted is now £1200 hence the thefts. And eBay is a lottery with prices from £100 to £250...

But eBay or a wedge may help. Try the wedge first!

Are you serious?!! :o
That's outrageous! How on earth can BMW possibly justify that for just one unit. It would be bad enough for a pair, but each! :x

Seems to me that the folding mechanism is okay,.. tried it in and out several times and no knocks or grinding. I'm thinking that its just been the snap-release system that saved the day. I just don't think I pulled it far enough back to re-set it ? Are you telling me there's no 'snap-release' on these mirrors ???????? If not, then I'm fooked !
Hopefully it's only the heated glass part that needs to be replaced ( £ 20 on the 'bay' )

There certainly was some form of release on my 2005, but it didn't allow a great range of motion. If it's moved enough to 'save' a disaster then I'm relieved for you....

New glass fitted tonight,.. tried all the movements in/out etc. and all seems to work.
Looks like I've been lucky this time, so from now on I must remember to fold them in when i park in our narrow street.

Can it not be programmed to do that when locked?

Can with Intravee but on EVERY lock? Wear and tear will kill the cogs over time...
