Take key out?
Take key out?
Been sitting in the car for over 4 hours without engine on. The key is either in or out , and it looks like when in that it is like an accessory setting. Will this drain the battery though if not doing anything like having the radio on?

Re: Take key out?
I had to read that 3 times.
Oh and I don't know.....albeit I would expect a new car of such quality to sustain having the radio on when parked.

Re: Take key out?
I think that is called 'Radio Ready' and only limited systems are actually 'awake' and available. I don't know how long the battery will last in that mode though. But as AW8 suggests, it's a new car so you should be OK. It might even tell you in the Handbook......
You could always see if it will start, and run the engine - assuming you're still in a position to do so......and won't gas everyone

Car has a system whereby if the battery voltage falls to a 'dangerously' low level (unable to start), it shuts down pretty much everything automatically. (radio, park heater etc). You also get a nice audible 'bong' and an orange battery icon comes up in the HUD and centre console (the upper part between the clocks). So you should always be able to start the car. Theoretically!

Re: Take key out?
Handy to know...
Never had mine in that mode. Mind you it did throw me this morning when I pushed the button to start and there was a long pause.........then noticed the preheating symbol and away she went..
Amazing how quickly you forget things when you haven't been behind the wheel since Xmas. There were a few things I had to think about this morning......
No doubt it will all become second nature again very quickly..

No probs. E70/1 are notorious for battery drain. Some of the systems stay on for upto 30mins after you lock the car! Especially bad if like me you do a lot of short journeys. BMW's official stance is that you should do journeys of 30miles. Well could always start taking the kids to school along the scenic route! It's a get out really, the car has a large number of electronic components and a battery just simply not big enough. Another reason for going to 24v systems in the future!
Oh and the battery has to be coded to the car- so not just a simple replacement job with a 10mm spanner!
@X5Sport- ETA on getting back to driving again at all? Cant imagine not being able to drive for 3+ months! Hope its sooner rather than later!

Oh great! Another way of keeping you in the Dealers pockets. I've noticed more and more camera manufacturers are now locking customers in with their batteries. OEM chargers won't have anything to do with non-OEM batteries (which are 1/3 of the price!). Some cameras won't even work with non-OEM batteries!

Surgeon gave me the OK providing I am accompanied for now. Went out on 1st run today in local area and got the X6 scratched at B&Q by some selfish idiot with a trolley who didn't hang around to admit their accident. Hopping Mad! No cameras or witnesses of course. It's too deep to polish out so will need professional attention. It's only 1cm long on the front bumper, but that's not the point!
I hope to be allowed to go solo by the end of the month. Depends upon progress...
I do have to careful about both accelerating and braking so I'm well back from any car in front and early on the brakes. Gentle use of throttle. I can almost hear the X6 muttering "Oh for goodness sake, I'm a 40d, not a golf cart
"......

You have to use a key? Mine just stays in my pocket and I push the start/stop button for everything.

That's interesting about the system being on for up to 30 minutes as I've often returned to the car and found that my iPod is playing a different track to the one I was listening to when I got out!!

Re: Take key out?
I get that on my X6, but that's on Bluetooth, and I think the 'shutdown' signal gets missed by the iPhone so it just keeps going happily to itself. The car has defo gone to sleep.
