Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Bit of a thread resurrection.
My X5 has averaged between 23 and 27 for the last 2 years as its mostly local driving or towing. Without trailer, I get mid 30`s on a good run.
I`ve noticed recently, thats dropped to around 20, even on a 180 mile Motorway drive, it only averaged 28 ! Usually I`m into the mid 30`s on a run like that.
This could have been a steady increase in consumption, but I`ve only noticed it the last month or so. New tyres were fitted in December and a run to Germany and back showed almost identical consumption compared to the previous tyres, so I don`t believe thats an issue.
Car drives fine, no new noises or changes in feel, just an increase in fuel consumption.
I towed my trailer / track car to Rockingham and back the other week, that showed 19mpg over that journey, minimal delays and no stopping in traffic, where it usually averages 25 > 27mpg (I drive at 55 to 60 when towing, so get good economy).
Any thoughts ?

Done all the usual checks? Filters, vacuum lines all on and no leaks? Could be the MAF needs replacing. What's the mileage total? Any obvious change in acceleration etc?

Could be the DPF , that'll make a big difference if it's clogged up .

Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
What DPF? If it's an E53 then they aren't fitted with one as standard. You can opt to have one fitted later, but from the factory the UK spec 3.0d only had a catalytic converter. There was a retrofit kit offered and Owners were given the choice of adding one in the event of an exhaust failing.
The current models have DPF's in order to meet Euro IV and V. The E53 was a Euro III vehicle, one of the reasons why the exhaust tips point at the road.
But it could be a blocked CAT or sensor issue, so you may be going down the right route...

Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Was under the assumption that mine was fitted with one from what they said at my last full inspection .
But mine is a Europeene model , not UK model , and there were some differences .

So it's been around 3 weeks... Did you get the snapped plug out? And has your mpg improved?

Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Apart from just buying a new one, is there any way of checking the MAF ?
Re: E53 3.0d POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION
Bit of an update.
Removed the MAF, cleaned it with Carb cleaner. Decided there was nothing to lose, apart from a bit of time.
Rebuilt it all, went for a long motorway drive the next day.
On the onboard display, it averaged 35.2 at 75mph. Came back the next day, exactly the same route and speed and it averaged 31.1
Went on a much longer run this weekend, over 4 hours each way. Cruise set for 90% of the journey at the same GPS speed. Averaged 34.7 going. On the return leg, exactly the same route and speed (journey was completed in the same time as there was almost no traffic each way), it averaged 31.3.
I have no idea why the consumption should change so much on a 200+ Mile motorway journey between going one day and coming home the next, with almost identical conditions and speed each way.
