Hi,
Just thought I would say hello to everyone.
Attached is our 40D X5 (Johnny) doing what it was bought for. Yes it is grubby but it was a very wet February weekend! Previous to this we had an E92 M3 Limited edition with all the boxes ticked on the spec sheet. Unfortunately it wouldnt pull our 27 feet caravan!
The X5 has supprised me in its performance for such a big car,but still want to get it chipped at some point.

The X5 makes an excellent tug for a van of its size. Where other cars are struggling up some steep hills when towing, "Johnny" will do it with ease even accelerate up them! I can only guess how it be with a chiptune fettle.

Now that's a proper 'van'...

We've been toying with the idea of buying one for years but (a) have nowhere on site or nearby to store it and (b) have consistently been told that 'twin-axle vans' do not always receive a warm reception on sites as they allegedly have an unfortunate association with the traveller community. I'm not convinced as these vans aren't THAT big! However...

I would prefer a 'twin' simply because they are naturally more stable as part of an outfit than a single. I've had a very nasty experience towing (closed the A1 southbound near Grantham for three hours on a Friday afternoon several years sgo with a very unsuitable and unstable outfit!!) hence the preference.

Do you ever have problems taking your twin anywhere? Is it really a problem, or only in certain parts of the UK/Europe?

Hi X5sport,
We have had no problems finding a site with the twin axle. Some grass only sites aren't over excited about them in the winter as they can chew the grass up when turning tightly, but they normally put us somewhere with easy access. We towed it to France last Easter and had no problems. This is our first ever caravan so I can't comment on the stability, but have not had any stability issues, even when we unknowingly crept up to 85 getting past an artic. The X5 does have an anti snake system built in, don't want to find out if it works though! We generally get around 24 mpg when towing, not bad as the van weighs near on 2 tonnes.

Useful info. Thanks for the reply. My X6 has the OEM tow bar fitted so should have the same anti-snake system..

You would need that anti snake indeed. My brother in laws car got turned upside down whilst passing a truck due to the wind impact. Well, he is Dutch after all.
