Post by Bandit » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:21 pm

Help.... a loud squeaking coming from the drivers /side rear, while driving and if I rock it while its parked. Its still under warranty but just want an idea what it might be before we take it back.E53 55reg 3.0d le mans. Cheers Ali..

Rear ball joint is most likely

I had that. Squeaks particularly over speed humps and the like. Sounded like a old cart.Turned out to be ball joints rather than bushes (the other potential culprit). Good news in that it is a reasonably cheap repair.

It will be even cheaper if it's the rear anti roll bar bushes like mine was ;) I would look at them first.

mine did that....it sound like one of those old squeeky pram springs of old...noticebale ay slow speeds over speed bumps and body articulation

it was a rear arm that had a ball joint on it at one end and a bush at the other end.

I think it was part 11 here

I'd go with rear ball joint but you need to get someone to rock it while you get under and have a look.

What was the outcome of this....mines just started doing this, not yet worked out what it is though as its dark and cant see anything. Seems to be coming from the middle of the rear end though.

As you've probably seen dm mine turned out to be bushes one was cheap but the other was not sold separately so had to have a whole arm at the back

My guess is the rear wishbone ball joint but I need to get under it with a bar and someone to bounce in the back. Short on time at the moment so may have to pay to get it done

Not managed to locate the squeak yet, what's best way to test? On axel stands with the wheel off or just get under the back with a long screwdriver and have a poke around?

I'm having the same problem atm. I think I've narrowed it down to the airbag! Is there any way to lube/grease this to stop the noise.

Dirtymonkey, I jacked the car up and took wheel off, then put axle stand on disc/hub, this allowed me to work the jack up and down whilst working all the suspension components. Hope that helps.

It seemed to stop for a couple of days now it's back again, got to be a bush somewhere and my guess is still the ball joint on the wishbone. Booked in for Wednesday so will find out soon enough. Can't be bothered to check myself with the weather so nice this weekend.

I've been told that the bush being dry is squeaking and when you jack it up they find a greased spot and drag it around a bit which is why sometimes after jacking up they can go quiet but only for a while

Apparently a few people drill a small hole through the rubber towards the metal and use spray copper grease via a straw then a blob of mastic to stop any dirt going in there but I thought that was all a bit Heath robinson for an X5

Agree on the weather it's so damn nice makes everything seam rosy
