Not recommending a novice diy for this but info on correct transmission fluids on this clicky

5HP24 (A5S440Z) uses Esso LT 71141

If dig online you can find the VAG equivalent which is cheaper than the BMW part number for same oil. Not worth upseting a gearbox specialist for self supply in my view. Good BMW indies will have a big tub of this stuff.

Not a mechanic, but I believe a straight sump drop & filter change wont replace the portion of ATF fluid old within the torque convertor.

Please note the above LT 71141 info is not for the GM transmission though chart covers other boxes.

latest update is car went into Jason yesterday, he carried a new software update on the engine, the gearbox already had the latest update, so he has taken reading of the box to see if new software can be written. it turns out the harsh downchange is from 3rd to 2nd.

Hi All

Just noticed this after a long absense..

I used Devron VI from OilsandLuricants.co.uk.
Apparently is equiv to the Esso, cheaper and looks / smells better...

Going from experience (and lets face it i have had a bit in the gearbox area!!)
Don't tackle a rebuild without prior research!!!
The main points being be methodical, clean and check / recheck everything as you take it apart and put back together.
All in all i think i must have re-assembled it 3 times whist stripping to ensure i knew where everything went.
The ole digi camera is your friend there and dont be affraid to use it.
If you are that way inclined then it is't that hard, and if anyone is thinking of doing that themselves then feel free to PM me.

The main failure on mine (3.0D E53) was the Tourque convertor linings stripped off completely..
the wear in the clutch packs was due to the broken spring in the valve block.

WRT Resets you can reset the adaptation values by the accelerator trick or using something like INPA. (which incedently does a good job on pairing your buetooth also!!)

Update had the gearbox rebuild about 6 months ago and lurch has been reduced (on a journey where it would happen 10-20 times it's down to 3-4 times) but not 100% gone, what would be the next move?

Just wondered if you still had the varying engine revs around 1800 rpm? I had this and was told it was the torque convertor on the way out, but since I rebuilt the engine its gone. I assume it was something to do with the vanos gear

Since the gearbox rebuild the car is completely different & the rev problem has gone, only thing that is left is the slight lurch.

Is it under a warranty for the rebuild?

Mine wasn't 100% right after the rebuild (changes between 2nd/3rd were uneven as the clutch overlap was wrong) and was eventually completely replaced with another remanufactured box once the firmware update was tried and did not improve things. I never found out what the issue was but that box was disassembled and not used again. The car has been perfect thereafter. :D

Update car has gone back to gearbox specialist, what I need to know is what really causes this problem and what part of the box is effected? Any help I can give him will be good.

Not much of a gearbox 'specialist' if he needs help..... :?

Could be overlap controls for the clutches, sticking clutch, faulty brake band, electronic controls, hydraulic pressure, hydraulic control valves, rebuild error, servos.......the list goes on and on.

There are a number of things that can cause trouble, but if they read the codes it may show up. I had a similar problem after a rebuild and eventually it was decided that the issue could not be solved and the box was replaced with a remanufactured unit. In my case there was no code showing and despite another strip down, nothing obvious was visible other than damage caused to the casings by the oil pump fragments.

The Mechatronics Unit was also replaced. Both replacements were covered under the original Warranty Direct claim for the failed transmission.

Don't get me wrong he has not asked for help I want to help him as this getting too much for the other half, could it be the mechatroics and if so what's the coat of this.

Latest update a valve body is being replaced on the gearbox looks like the one was fitted as part of rebuld was faulty.
