Loved it on my other X5, but every time I used it, it was one of those bum squeeze moments to hope it would close again :)

I would have thought you have quite a few of those moments living in Crawley.

If I'm honest I'm thinking twice about having it on the new one.

Great write up thank you.

I think I might have to add an SE to the list of E70s I'm looking at, they seem quite a bit cheaper than similar spec'd M Sport models. Although now of course I need to add HUD to my list of requirements! :P
But there is a nice m sport up for sale soon in your area ;)
Ah but does it have the HUD :slappy: :nahnah:

It does seem surprising how much cheaper even a fully loaded SE is compared to the M Sport. I must be missing something.

Do you guys know how to program Steering wheel buttons - say I want to program 1 of the buttons to switch rear view camera on and off ?

2010 onwards.  40d to start with and then the 30d as well, now all versions.

Lots of useful info here - thanks to OP! Will defo want 7 digit postcode search and better idrive so will keep the e53 till a nice highly specced LCI becomes affordable. There seems to be LOTS of desireable options though so I'm a bit worried I wont find one with all the spec I want!

I'm looking to buy this model and the review is helpful.

Does the 3.0D really only achieve 16mpg around town?

That's one of the reasons I'm getting rid of my current car.

I apologise for not posting in the newbie section but everyone who has seemed to have a pic of a x5. It made me feel inadequate.  :)

Welcome to the list. I share your concern about being labelled newbie. I started using the internet in 1986, before browsers.  But there is a lot to learn about E70s, n'est pas?

There's another thread http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9835.0.html on the top page about fuel economy. My 40d is getting over 20mpg, so 16 in a 30d seems too low. But it all depends on how you drive. I'm not the most gentle driver but if there's traffic I take it easy and go with the flow.

I just spotted this lengthy review now, two months after buying my E70 and five months after starting the search in earnest. It took 3 months to find the right car.  I have a few comments that I hope are helpful:

Q7:
My cousins own a VW garage and have been honest with me about the high-level vehicles. They absolutely love the Polos and Golfs etc, but as the VW group luxury level goes up so unfortunately does the trouble level. My cousins don't feel that VW supports its dealers well with high-tech issues.  A Touareg has, for example, 20-something computers scattered around its body, and troubleshooting that web is time consuming. It's not uncommon for customers to spend £3k on a repair, but at the end of the day the cause was a relatively-minor £600 problem that took £2k hours to diagnose. The Q7 does not escape this syndrome. Googling vehicle reliability in French and German led me to BMWs, as owners report less problems (I live in France but buy cars in Germany).

Comfort Access (322):
I agree with you and absolutely love this option. Some feel that it's a security risk. I don't quite know why yet but perhaps someone can explain.  There is one oddity: I must remove my key from my pocket when washing the car. Else the doors lock and unlock like mad hatters when the water stream hits the door handles.

Sound System:
My LCI has 677 Hifi Professional. I play bass in a rock band. This stereo is as good as I could ask for. I can feel the bass in my chest. Perhaps the pre-LCI systems were more puny.

'Nuff said!

We never got to play with a Q7 as the dealer was rubbish, booked a test drive then kept us waiting for 3/4 of an hour. Well, we left after this time as it looked like it was going to be longer. Never mind I think we got the better car.

My E70 (Feb 2010 build) has the later CIC I-Drive stuff but is pre-LCI (6-speed gearbox etc) so must have been on the cusp of the change over. Never mind eh  ::).
