Cycle Roof Mount System

Post by 5hep » Sun Mar 18, 2012 10:36 pm

Looking into getting a roof mount to carry 4 bikes that will fit the X.

Thule 591 proride does seem to get good reviews mated to aerobars.

Not sure on all the pieces required for bars etc.

Anybody bought or know of any good deals about then please shout.

Thanks

And apologies in advance, I couldn't resist!

Have you got the tow bar? Better options if you do.

I have Mont Blanc Barracuda x2 which are very well designed. I can also fit one either side of my roof box.
I can stand on the side steps and lift up the bikes solo but obviously easier with a small set of steps or someone handing you the bikes.

I just bought a pair of Halfords roof carriers, reduced from 100 quid to 80 for a pair. They fit aero bars and are all quick release with locks to lock the carriers to the bars and to lock the bikes to the carriers. We're thoroughly impressed with them but yes, you will definitely need some steps!

If you want top quality I would always go for a Thule rack. They have a few diffrent ones to do what you need. They seem to last forever, I have one that is well over 10 years old now and still work just as it did when new.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Have managed tp purchase 4 x Thule 591 bike racks for £233 delivered which is a good deal.

Just need to source 757 Rapid Foot Pack and decide on either Aerobars or Aero Wing bars.

Plus matching key set :?

In all its adding up :o

I think I have that set as I noticed that the E53 is different from the E70 so no good to me. Need to get a new set for my bars.

Must verify the number first though.

i bought thule 757s off ebay, managed to get a set in super good shape with locks. i also bought bars off ebay - not the aero bars the normal square bar cos i found it cheaper.

havin said that - at the risk of soundin stupid, i don't plan to buy a bike rack for the roof  cos that makes the overall car really tall, so my plan is to buy a tow-hook mounted bike rack.

5hep, You can't go wrong with the Thule set up. Had them on the 'X' and now my Touring. The 757 foot pack worked on both cars but had to get shorter 'Aero' bars for the Touring

Endded up getting my 591's from Ford Direct cheaper by a mile over any eBay set.

5hep - you can have mine for a friendly £250 - how does that sound

I have no idea how much they are worth though, I have to buy a new set of feet for my new setup.

Thanks all for the suggestions and PVR for trying to rip me off
Where are the mods when you need them

All sorted: Went with

Thule 757 Foot Pack
Thule Aerobars
4 x Thule ProRide 591 cycle mount (new 20kg ones)
2 x Thule 596 One Key System

All fitted and working. Had to switch a couple of the 591 system around to get easier access to locks.
One key system is great. One key for all 12 locks.

Managed to find a company online that would refund the value of 596 key system when you return your unwated locks. :D

I'll get some pictures up but X has not had its wash today.
