Roof rail respray/replacement.

Post by x555 » Sun Mar 11, 2012 1:26 pm

Hey Yaaaaall,
Haven't been on here much lately (though i have been casting an eye over the riff raff from time to time  you know who you are!!!!) so as i needed to touch up/respray my passenger roof rail from roof box paint damage i thought i'd better make a small contribution in the way of a simple how to :D
As some of you know i will be selling the x so i'm getting all the niggly jobs that i have been meaning to sort out for a while now ready to sell the beast.
The roof rails are really easy to take off there are three size 40 torx screws either side hidden behind rubber bungs and that's pretty much it.

roof rail bungs....
Image

torx screw to remove...three at size 40...
Image

put something down so's not to catch the roof paintwork (as this is a little harder to respray :o )
Image

rails removed leaving the holding plates...
Image

rails all sprayed up.....i couldn't find a perfect colour match as the rails had naturally faded aswell so i ended up spraying both to keep them the same :) ....
Image

the rattle can that i used....
Image

all back on and looking like new :D

This was a really simple job to do if your rails are scratched/worn or looking tatty

Nice job....

Did you need to use an 'etch' primer because of the alloy base, or was the damage superficial so no bare metal showing?

Nice one. Do look so much better. Mine are a lovely gloss black with a think layer of lacquer to hopefully protect them.

You star! I'm about to do this job on mine - so a very helpful How-To.
My paint has flaked off on one so presume I'll have to use the etch primer mentioned?

Thanks again.
