Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
You don't need to go to the 40d to get the twin turbo engine, the 35d and previously the 3.0sd all are the same engine. The 40d gained a few more bhp but its only about 10 more. It did however get the new 8 speed gearbox which is reported to be great. The "older" 6 speed with the 35d engine still is almost 290bhp with the 3.0 twin turbo engine and can be picked up used from 30k upwards.
Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
Wasn't it 286bhp vs 306bhp? Anyway, I had the 535d then got myself an X6 40d and you feel those extra 20 horses, and the accompanying torque. The 8 speed box is the icing on the cake.
But then again, any Beemer is a 'good drive' so ease yourself in m8.

Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
40d may now be 306bhp, not sure but pretty sure it was 298 or thereabouts when introduced.

I had one of the first in the country
Think it is 286bhp up from 272 from my old 535. Both remapped to c350bhp, ie more than a 40d!

40d has always been 306PS on the E71. Mine was one of the first into the UK after the build began in October 2010. 600Nm/443ft/lb torque, but can be taken to 700Nm if you're careful. I think the triple turbo variants will be coming in at that sort of power/torque in June.
LCI versions now to get LED main front lighting as an option for almost £2k!!! I wonder what the upgrade kits will come out at.....apart from expensive.

Are we helping you spend your money yet? Get a brochure and price list, and we'll 'help' with the configuration too - at no charge. I mean, you are a forum member so it wouldn't be right now, would it..

Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
I definitdly think the heart wins out and as such you will find a way to buy it finance it or sell a kidney to pay for it if you want the car.
When I drove my brother in laws 35d X6 and I fell for it just amazing so I have put my name down for first refusal when he decides to sell it to get his new range rover, which will give me time to save up or whatever I have to do to find the money.
Since I've bought the X5 although petrol I don't begrudge it in any in fact I just love the sound of the V8 it's addictive. And worth every penny.

Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
X5 new purchase is lead by emotion not economics.
Buy one and you are rewarded everytime you drive it.

Re: How to justify X5 purchase?
It was time to change our Honda CRV and I always wanted a BMW As live in a flat and want to move to a house, I decided to buy new x5 before first so I could concentrate on the house purchase without distractions, lol.
Wanted to go for ex demo but could not find the right spec for me so ended up buying new but with a good discount (should have asked for more though ), but I think if you want X5 you either buy one now (preferabley LCI) or wait for a new X5 in coming out in 2014.
And I totally agree this purchase is lead by emotion and passion. IMHO X5 is at the moment best looking SAV in the class ... cayenne and RSS are good looking too but X5 has super-wide rear wheels
