Hey guys,

Just picked up my first x5 a couple of weeks ago. I wasnt really in the market for one but it came up cheap so I went for it  Its an older 2002 3.0d Sport model. Its got 22" Kahns at the moment but I managed to pick up a cheap set of M Sport alloys in need of a refurb. Hopefully have them on for the weekend with any luck.

Its got a few niggles which i'll get round to sorting out before the summer as im planning on taking it on a 1600 mile round trip to Germany and back and want it running 100% spot on.

The stuff that needs sorted on it so far: both front cv joints need replaced, self level susp inact warning on dash(although the ride height hasnt dropped and the airbags all still seem inflated so im hoping its nothing too serious), brake discs need skimmed, and the original stereo has been removed and a single din unit has been butchered in its place. Oh and it has a duff parking sensor too!

Apart from the above, the car drives well. Its got 134k on the clock but still pulls strong. Im also running it on Biodiesel so we'll see how I get on with that.

Welcome,

I recently created a thread about CV Joints which you might find useful:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3662&p=36446#p36446

As for the stereo, you will probably find that to replace your single DIN (I hate them too) back with the standard items, it will be about the same cost as to fit an aftermarket unit that is specially made for the X5. There is a group buy going on at the moment for these units at around £300ish IIRC. (well worth it imo)

This is what the aftermarket unit looks like:

It has DVD/CD/Bluetooth Phone/iPod/TV/NAV/SD Card Inputs etc, so would be a great addition to take on your road trip :)

Here is the group buy thread if you're interested:

I can't help on the susp inact warning but hopefully you'll get that sorted pretty easily!

My 2004 has 120k on the clock, and I'd love to take it abroad, but after the horror stories of gearbox failure I'm too scared to! haha! (Mine is the Auto box though, is yours manual or auto?)

It would be pretty awful for the box to go in the UK, but I don't know what I'd do if it happened abroad!

Anyway, good luck with yours mate! get some pics up!

Welcome.

The above headunit or the OEM one which is in the for sale section sounds like a good alternative, assuming the OEM tuner is still in place in the car as otherwise the above is the only option.

Re driving abroad - I would have the European Cover which at least gets the car back home in case it does fail (and gets you to the destination).

Welcome to the club...

BMW only support the use of B8 (8% Biodiesel) in their engines. This is the stuff supermarkets will or are selling already. What damage 100% biofuel does I don't know, but beware in case it affects the pumps as they are expensive components to replace, as are the injectors.

Cheers for that link on the cv joints. I'll deffo be getting a set of those driveshafts to save me time and hassle.

My x5 is an auto too. The last owner had the gearbox replaced by Harry Fairbairn BMW back in 2009 so hopefully it should last the journey lol.

I'll get pics up with the M Sport wheels on, I really dont like the look just now with the 22" Kahns. They'll be going cheap if anyone fancies them?

eBay. Lots of people bought from china for around £35. I'm sure someone will be able to provide you with a link.

I would guess the wheels are this style? When looking at X5s a few months ago, I saw 2 or 3 that had these same wheels fitted:

If they are these one, I quite like them! :)

Yep exact same as the above lol. I dropped my M Sport wheels off today to get refurbed so hopefully have them back this weekend and get them fitted.
