Launch control ..... sort of
It turns out if you put it in sport when stationary, use your left foot on the brake and build up the revs, when you take your foot off the brake it's goes like a rocket. Whilst this is unlikely to be good for the car, anyone got any idea about exactly how bad this is for it?

Very. An old colleague of mine did once explain why stalling an auto box was bad, but I can't remember his explanation now. Just don't do it.

The same result on a manual i would guess, letting the clutch out with the brakes on, cant be good for an auto box.

One quick way to break an auto transmission.
Doing this will cause excessive loads on either or both the power clutches and brake bands for 1st or 2nd gear (which will then fail) as well as overheat the oil. The end result will be that your car will either not go anywhere at all, or drive like a manual with a slipping clutch. Either way you would be asking for a very large repair bill for a new torque converter and rebuilt transmission.
aka - not a good idea

Our TT has this has an option
I've probably only done it twice in the time we have owned and it makes me cringe. I won't ever do it again.
As for the x5 and your method - never!!!!

Launch control ..... sort of
Never mind I was joking with you.
Re: Launch control ..... sort of
Moving on from that one quickly ...
I dread to think what happens to the gearbox / clutch when doing that but would not want to put a car through that.

Er........ Anyway, back to my how to ruin your gearbox post.
Back in the day I used to ride highly strung 2 stroke motorbikes. When you have to slip the clutch to 8,000 rpm to get the thing to move you can lose your mechanical sympathy pretty quickly. Mind you, they went pop fairly regularly.

....and fortunately they were also likely to be a lot less than £2k a 'pop' too..
Still, you could always go onto a 'Redneck' Forum and suggest it to one of them. Having seen some Youtube footage of red-neck 'engine parties' where they drain all the oil and coolant out of a V8, start it and then take bets on how long it takes to blow up, it sounds just the sort of thing they'd love to try. It would also tell us for free what would happen to an 'X' transmission. Sound like a plan..?
If you want to know what I mean, look up Jeff Dunham - an American ventriloquist - and one if his characters 'Bubba J'. Going to see him live at Wembley in April.
I haven't linked as I'm not sure how the club feels about linking in to YouTube videos.
