Terrible! we lost 10k on it, paid £19995 in sept 2010 as a bmw approved vehicle & only got 10k part exchange!

It has been as expensive indulgement,but at least i owned one for a while.Admitted i could have bought a cheaper one at the time but it was low miles & i wanted piece of mind with the warranty & the values of the 4.8is have dropped through the floor as no one wants big v8s.

If you are willing to put up with fuel bills you get a lot of car for the money though.

Lee, sorry you're going One less 4.8 friend in an ever-shrinking group of 4.8 owners I must admit, I do think about the petrol bills all the time even though I get "good" consumption on mine (23.5-26mpg, has even gone to 32mpg on one or two runs)and the fuel consumption is actually better than the 3.0i petrol, as I've owned both and can actually verify that strange fact........ I had a diesel Kuga as a company car before being made redundant and although it was ok, it never measured up to the X in any way. The fuel consumption was actually not that brilliant for a diesel -only around 36mpg in the year I had it. Every time I think of exchanging my beloved X for a diesel variant, I do think of its wonderful Webasto and that great V8 roar and its lovely spec and colour.......plus I invariably owe more on it than I'm likely to get in part ex, unless I do a deal with a BMW dealer. And its fantastic on long commutes, especially in this awful weather. Do come back and visit........

Penny, don't even think of getting rid of the X, your boys love the headrest screens, you love the car, go on, you know you do I'd be very lonely on here as one of the few female members if you vanished

Thanks Condor, we have said we will definately miss the sound,colour & looks of the 4.8is especially as you know i think it looks great in le mans blue.

You seem to do really well with your economy figures i never matched them & i am pleased with new 5 regards economy the computer is showing 54mpg already it seems amazing considering the size of the touring.

I thought the 4.8is hid its power well when i had it but compared to the 5 its a rocket & the 5 is a bit wanting in that regard.

Glad yours is still treating you well & i will stay in touch.

unless you're doing mega miles I wouldn't bother trading in and getting an "economy" diesel. 1) calculate the difference in costs of the cars, i guarantee mpg won't pay back the money you lose trading in 2) petrol's suddenly become a lot cheaper than diesel. 3) all cars will be electric or hydrogen or something else soon anyway so you might as well enjoy the last of the great cars!

It wasnt an easy decision as i love V8s,i also have a TVR Cerbera 4.5 V8 for thrills & the x5 couldnt compete in performance terms & i never really liked the autobox as it robs the involvement.

I am already enjoying my new 5 series the steering is lovely & direct with a puny 4 pot upfront & i like changing gears myself & the insurance has halved not counting the fuel savings.

But i will always love the 4.8is it cost twice as much new & i feel you always get what you pay for so its a quality machine & the sound was immense,my new 5 is dog slow but i will get used to it & i just have to take the TVR out to realise life doesnt always have to be boring.

Out of interest what sort of economy figures were you getting that forced your arm to sell it?? The 4.8 represents huge value for money as a secondhand buy right now, but I guess you need to be realistic with the costs.

I still haven't taken the plunge yet into X5 ownership as I simply don't know whether to go the diesel route or the V8 route, I have poured over every thread and even started my own but still can't make the best decision. The more I look at spec, mileage and age of the V8's compared to the diesel, the more I think that's the way forward.

But then I read a thread like this with several other V8 owners singing from the same hymn sheet and it throws me into confusion once again.

There is not one car I have owned which I have deliberated over for so long!!

I am in exactly the same position. I have driven a 4.8is and though it was very nice seemed to have usable power everywhere.

But would love a direct comparison against a Derv from someone who has had both.

If you are doing limited mileage (say 5-7k or less per year) then the V8 makes sense, but it's fuel consumption is typically around 20 if you're well behaved. Urban driving could put you well into the teens. The diesel version is more expensive to buy and holds its price due to economy figures. It also has the same torque as the V8 (if you buy the 218bhp facelift engined variant, it does run out of revs earlier of course, but it's still no slouch), but will cost more to fuel if on limited use simply because of the extra price of diesel. Given the current fuel price hike - oil now at its highest for 8 months - that won't change.

The amount of use you're going to make of the car will probably be a key factor to use in your decision making. If you do go for petrol, remember that you may take a hit when selling it. Then of course it's down to V8 roar or not......

My 2005 3.0D Sport Auto turned in 27.5 around town and up to 35 on the motorway between home an Manchester (170 miles away). I did see 37 once, but only once - and it was a slow run south due to traffic conditions.

Hello, to be fair if i took it easy i did get 20mpg out of it & it was used as my daily driver but if i drove it as it should be this dropped to 12mpg on my way to & from work & it was hard on my pocket.

As others have said if you use it as a second car it makes sense for the V8 roar alone,but i am amazed at the mpg i get in my new 5 series & it has made me wonder why i threw so much petrol at the 4.8,i do miss the power though.
I have said before if i bought an x5 again it would certainly be a diesel the torque suits the car & its a heavy beast so whatever engine you have it wont be especially economical.

The spec & feel of the 4.8 is special & you gets loads of motor for your money.

I had the V8 in my 740 and the fuel costs did not actually bother me so much, but the driving pattern on my 740 was only long distance whilst the X5 was going to be used by my wife for everything which is why I went for the diesel to avoid the weekly pain. Still not sure how she managed to do 500 miles each week around town though ...
