BMW X3 3.0sd help.
Hi all,
Just went and had a look at a 2006 X3 3.0sd with 91k mile on the car. The car is up for £11500. Its the M sports model with Sat nav, leather and 19 inch wheels. The only thing that worries is the mileage and also it's overdue a service by about 800 miles. What do you guys think? Is the price good or not? It does have full service history and in good cond. thanks

Welcome aboard.
Which service is it due? Oil, or either Inspection 1 or 2? I would want that done, especially as it's already overdue. FSH or not, the fact that 800 miles have passed since the due point, I would want to know why as that shows a lack of care by someone. What else hasn't been done? Price sounds a little too high for that mileage, maybe £2.5k less. These 3.0 engines are pretty bombproof when treated right so 91k won't be a problem.
It is manual or auto? A Comms Pack (Bluetooth etc) is also a must - especially on an M Sport. Private or Dealer sale? How many previous owners?

Hi,
The car is due an inspection 1 service. I phoned BMW and the car has been serviced by the same dealer for all it's life. It's an auto with the comms pack. It's a private sell and the reason why the service was missed was due to his wife not notifying him until 1 week before the car was due to be sold.
It's 1 previous owner. The car is nice but all the alloys have bad kerb marks on them. I did give him £100 deposit, and he did say the next service was an oil service but when I called BMW they said it needed an Inspection 1 instead and the cost for that is £420 compared to £220 for the oil service.

looking at autotrader it's the cheapest SD model I can see, the others are like £18k but with half the mileage.

Re: BMW X3 3.0sd help.
Knock him down by the cost of the service, and for refurbing the wheels (£100 each depending upon how badly marked). £18k is pretty optimistic for those sellers to be honest. I bet they're chancing their arms so to speak.. My 2005 X5 Sport went for £16k with 52k on the clock and that was fully loaded spec wise. That was a Dealer AUC sale price so the buyer got a 12-month warranty.
Hard negotiation time, or walk away time I guess. If you walk away I would expect your deposit back given the service type and extra cost associated with it compared to what was reported. It might also need brake fluid doing too (time based every two years) which will add more costs etc.

Hi,
You're right. I think I'm going to walk away as it's too much work needed to bring it up to how i would want it.
I have just found this on autotrader. The dealer is in Northern Ireland but he is willing to bring the car down if I give him a deposit

Re: BMW X3 3.0sd help.
Have a look at my reply on bmwland and check the tyres no matter which one you get it's very important that they're star marked.
X3 3.0d M Sport
Re: BMW X3 3.0sd help.
Have you looked in the classifieds, ROger XP was selling a nice X3 M Sport, its the 3.0 rather than twin turbo though.

Re: BMW X3 3.0sd help.
Not sure if you got the SD but just to give you my opinion (I picked up mine about 8 weeks ago).
Basically, I love my X3 SD. They are much quicker and more fun than a standard 3.0D. I basically test drove the whole range and the SD is much faster, very responsive and you can throw it around corners. Its a different car than the 3.0D. I would say test drive the 3.0D and the 3.0SD then make your decission. The difference is black and white and worth the extra cost.
2. The road tax is £425 so try and get as much tax thrown in as you can.
3. The MPG is average. On the motorway you will get 34MPG but off the motorway only expect 27MPG
4. Check the tires. If they are not 'star' rated - even if they have 7mm left - rated then assume you need to replace them ASAP as BMW will say you need 'star rated' ones. As set of Rosso's will set you back £1100
5. Check the service history and review if anything was missed. An oil service is £130, a level 1 is around £275 (independant).
6. Check the car pulls very strong. If you put it in SD mode and floor it from a standing start it should fly to 60mph (I had an S4 and the SD is basically just as quick).
7. Check noises - mine has a rattle which is annoying and a loud tyre noise (past 50mph) which I think is the fact that the tyres are not BMW star rated (or so BMW told me).
Anyway, they are great cars - depends on that you are looking for but for a very quick family car that will fit 5, keep up with basically anything on the road and fit in your bikes are suff then there is little else which ticks all the boxes.
cheers
