Might be getting some snow

PS....I hate the south centric snow bullshine on the news...BBC the worst not far behind is SKY

Heathrow cock up yet again with a snowflake and they're reporting as if it's like the film "the day after"
M25 gets a special (south) mention too
SKYs list of airports didn't include Manachester (and we've had snow you know)...ours is fine...we're tough up north

damn i forgot that hill descend button!

i've tried that in land rovers in their experience centres - once in heavy mud and rain. that worked an absolute treat!

DSC - yeah thanks that kinda sounds logical.

cos in the manual it says with DSC off it uses more brakes cos it then heavily depends on brakes to stop the wheel trying to spin (brake action works even when DSC off).

Yes for got to say i used hill descend button on the lanes when i went and tuck the pics, works from around 20mph. Kept the car straight as well, so a pretty good thing to use.

Well, all I can say is I'm very, very disappointed.

We've no snow at all up here on the coast, Aberdeenshire way

There is some inland but not much to speak of.

Still got a load around here (massive mountains as I have cleared the drive). Today the tap in the utility room finally defrosted, the outside taps still solidly frozen so no luck with washing cars here.

Right thats the 20,s back on and the winter set stored in the garage... 40 mile round trip a day for work so we ll see what happens .

Almost guaranteed to snow now then

Off on a wee break in Pitlochry and was thinking of heading back over Glen Shee.
Most of the roads will be clear, so no real point.

Though winter tyres were better on the colder wet winter roads than summer ones

There are but I think oat above 7 deg they start to wear quicker.

Also I red that snow tyres are no use when the tyres only have 4mm left, don't no how true it is. So if so be aware of buying with this limit.

Most tyres start to get a but 'iffy' below that depth, but only in wet/very wet conditions as the tyre cannot clear enough water.

When I worked for the Police back in the 80's, 3mm was the mandatory change point on all vehicles, and after a no fault (of mine) accident in my own car about 25 years back I even had my own insurers recommend that I change the tyres as they were reading between 3-4mm all round. When I queried the reason as to why, it was to do with aquaplaning. I can see their point (though at the time I ignored it), especially with the wider tyres our cars have and the consequentially lower on road weight footprint.

Tyre tech has changed a lot since then, but I still suspect much less than 3mm is maybe adding too much risk. I still tend to change my own tyres as soon as they get near 3mm 'just in case', though whether it's really necessary I don't know.

Winter tyres are supposed o perform best below 7C, but even so, very low mileage cars may still be fine running on them all year if a recent press report is to be believed. I think their point was that the average temps in the UK meant that for this use pattern, winter tyres were fine and might be a better choice than Summer Rubber.

multiple factors ..

thread - winter tires have thread designed to disperse more water (less aquaplane), grip better in snow than summer tires.

rubber compound - standard rubber gets too brittle in very low temp and starts to wear out faster; similarly winter tires have rubber compound designed to operate in lower temperatures; they work best when temp is low and they wear off faster in higher temps.

anyways, true enuf with these wide tires the risk of aquaplaning is very high, so thread is very important.

Tyres on the 20,s are 6 months old , so plenty tread on them , outside temp was up to 11 today and 5 for through the night. Saw on the news that parts of England are in drought conditions..... what s going on with the weather...probably have to put the winters back on in July ..

Daft innit. They're talkiing of 16degC by the end of this week!! Winters coming off very soon on both cars. Have to get SWMBO working on that one. Not allowed to drive now until my spine's been fixed in March (got a neck disc failed on me), and for at least a month thereafter.

And I can see why there are calls for a water 'national grid' to move water from where the rain is sufficient (or being allowed to flow over the reservoir level control weirs). What I don't get is why we don't already have one - that'll be lack of investment again, just like out lack of action to actually put proper gas storage capacity in place. Sometimes I just don't understand our utility companies - unless of course making as much as they can out of each of us is their only objective.

So bonuses and pats on the back all round for managers then, and the long term view gets missed again. I've been seeing this for so many years and it's so bleedin obvious!!

Sorry being cynical - cabin fever!!
