I went down to my local tyre centre the day after I bought my X5 and picked up a set of Diamaris rears 315/35/20 with about 4mm of tread on for £30 each fitted.

I was surprised they had them in stock, but they had loads. The owner of the place actually drives abroad himself in a huge wagon and buys loads of them, he then supplies them to the local part-worn tyre places, as well as keeping loads for his own place :) when these go I'll be getting a brand new set from blackcircles/camskill, but at least i'm not risking 6 points now! I drove the car home with racing slicks on the back!!

I presume from this statement that if you've ever bought a second hand car you've always replaced all four tyres with new ones ?
My point is every second hand car sold has part worn tyres on & most people don't have a problem with this ?
If I had the choice between a part worn from a quality manufacture & a new tyre from some dubious chinese ditch finder I know which I'd go for.
I've had part worns before when I've had a puncture that could not be repaired, I bought a matching tyre with the same amount of tread rather than have a new tyre on one side & one with 3mm on the other. As long as you check it for damage / dodgy puncture repairs before it is fitted.

Wrong. They may be part worn but they will have been fitted as new at some point, unless they have been purchased as "part worn". Tyres sold as part worn must be clearly marked as part worn. I always check tyres as carefully as I can, there a good bargaining point.

It was a place in Wolverhampton called Martini tyres.

I saw a set of Goodyears 275/40/20 at another place in Wolves yesterday with 5-6mm on each tyre, they looked great, but one had a pinhole puncture. They wanted £50 for the good one and £30 for the damaged one.

The cheapest rear tyres Quickfit could quote me in 20" flavour was £370 each! :|

The same place I mentioned above (Martini) tyres offered me a set of 'Sunny' front tyres 275/40/20 for £50 each brand new.... But I gave them a miss.

Have to agree with phil on this.

I fully accept bad/dodgy poor quality part worns are clearly not a good idea but I to mwould prefer 4 matching decent brand/spec tyres than multiple depth & makes even if 1 or 2 fresh ditchfinders out of 4.

As said ll used cars come with used tyres & new buyers dont typically r know much re previous owner(s), how car was driven, damage to rims out of sight or skill epertise of those who fitted the tyres.

Nothing wrong with decent part worns if decent brand/type absent of compromising damage & fitted properly but only if maths is right. Unfortunately many sell poor part worn tyres & for too much mark up.

I read a story 6 or 7 years ago where a pensioner bought an ex demo car. He pointed out the tyres that needed replacing. The dealer replaced all 4 with part worns and got the car ready for the customer etc etc. The day that man picked up his new car was his last when one of the tyres blew out on the motorway, killing him, his wife and also a young family who were caught up in the carnage. Turned out a couple of them tyres were 12 years old and the rubber had perished.

If your gonna use part worns then read up learn what the symbols and letters and numbers mean and make sure they are marked as part worn as per the 1994 regulations. They will detail year of manufacture compound etc.

All tyres have been fitted as new at some point so not sure what you mean by this ? The point I am trying to make is that there is no difference between buying a second hand car with used tyres & buying part worn tyres. In fact if you buy part worns you can at least check them inside for damage / puncture repairs etc before they are fitted, buying a seconda hand car you do not have this option ( unless you remove & refit them all ) & can only view them from outside for possible damage. They may look ok but have unseen damage inside.
On this subject I recently bought some 'new' Michelin tyres for my Esprit from a large tyre supplier & when they arrived the date stamp on both was 2701 making them nearly 11 years old ! Obviously they went straight back ! Buyer beware, always check the DOT code as 'new' tyres are not always new :)
