I was in the X and noticed the radio was not on, pressing the on button no longer worked, i also noticed i did not get the SPEED CAMERA WARRING but as the radio was not on the Intravee would not notify me of this anyway.
I found a thread on this and it's not uncommon for water to get into the boot, the drain plug can get blocked and then water just builds up in the floor of the boot. Guess what sits in there, the radio modual so this then becomes a submarine and dies.
So google says well another forum, pull out the fuse in glove box, fuse number 7, pull fuse 72-73 in the boot then put them back if all are ok, this resets the radio modual.
In may case this worked and my radio is now on and works perfect again, if this does not work then check for water in your boot, and check your modual for water. 50-50 if it works again if water was in there. If it still don't work after you've dried it out and checked for any easy signs of a fix then expect a stupid bill from BMW, or sauce a second hand one from the bay.
Just thought i would post on this forum, as i did a search on here and it brought up nothing.

Re: Radio would not come on
good to know the reset procedure.
only thing is - if you suspect or worse still notice water damage i wouldn't recommend trying the reset procedure before making sure that the area is absolutely dry again, and better still opening up the RCM and cleaning it of residue. cos even if the radio was in good order resetting and restarting it could end up damaging it due to water.

hopefully this won't happen but sometimes they go a bit funny before they're about to die (happened with mine). If this does happen have a look on the forum at amplifier repair, can get it sorted for a fraction of the price of BMW replacement.
2004 X5 4.4...to do - nothing! wheels refurbed, amplifier fixed, full MOT, living the dream!

Re: Radio would not come on
This is weird, have just come back in after gassing up, (literally, LPG ), and the radio wouldn't work, tried every button/knob etc. then read this, out with the torch and after a couple of minutes all is well.
Good to have a forum like this.
