ive had a look at kits in general, just wanted to see some fitted to an X.
not too fussed about mot etc, like you say easy to swap back if necessary, although since i would be going for the oem(ish) colour (4300k i believe) hopefully it wouldnt be an issue.

When I asked them: Looking through your kits I got lost in trying to find what I wanted as the model didn't seem to cover beyond 2004. 54 plate E53 BMW x5 (facelift model) . I'm after the most straightforward kit to fit dipped beam. The headlights appear to be projectors Can you list which are suitable please?
The reply I got was:The kit you need for your X5 isn't listed as yet but we do have the kit you need in stock.
the link (above)to the item you need which is a H7 canbus Pro kit, the only extra part you require is the bulb holders which are metal projector clips. You can still buy the H7 kit and we will send the metal projector clips for you in the kit, please just request this in the comments box at checkout. Once the order has gone through we will pick that request up when processing the order for dispatch . Simply choose H7 and the colour temp from the link below and as I said just request for us to send the clips you need for the kit in the comments box.
Perhaps for peace of mind you should email them?

it was last year but tbh i have never even seen him check the lights other than to see that they work!

iirc thats the same for all HIDS unless you esnure you meet the MOT standards mentioned in the thread.. could be wrong though!

I've just done this upgrade a couple of weeks ago, I did quite a bit of research so here goes:
I got mine from hids-direct and after emailing the guy he recommended this kit:

I know it's for a mk5 Astra but this kit includes a free bulb holder with the split in to feed your wiring through, he was kind enough to tell me to use the code REPEAT for 10% off.
Regarding the fitting, the instructions said to drill a 21mm hole in the plastic bulb cover but I found this wasn't big enough to feed the bulb through or the plugs through so had to make it a bit bigger. Also I found the split bulb holder pretty weak but I suppose with a split in that is always going to happen.
Apart from that all went fine and no warning lights on the dash.
You get brackets and screws for the ballast and they fitted exactly in some holes, you can see the location in this picture.
Not the neatest of jobs cutting the hole in the plastic cover, I specifically bought a 21mm cutter to make a perfect job, then had to bodge it bigger. I sawed some of the lugs off to get clearance for the grommet and also filed the back (you can see the filing marks) to ensure a good flat seal.
I also bought some new led's from ebay because the hid's make the angel eyes look really yellowy orange, I think they were about £18 and they were a really simple swap, again no problems and no warning lights.
My car is a facelift so same as yours.

Thanks Sonny. Excellent write up and I've made up my mind to buy this kit for mine. I tried Philips Extreme 100% and didn't think it was a big difference from standard. They may have been Philips that were in there anyway. When I changed to Philips and Crystal Headlamos on my Defender it made a huge difference.
If you've got a picture of the ballast location on the offside that would be good.

from below it seem that head light washers (no need of wipers) and either auto adjusting lights or self leveling suspension should suffice.
given that all Xs have head light washers and SLS (right on that?) i don' think there should be an issue..
