"Burnout gone wrong" is a runaway turbo. A common problem on turbo diesels. The turbo seals develop a leak and ingest oil from the lubrication system. The injected oil effectively becomes fuel causing the engine to run on the oil rather then deisel. As the engine runs faster, it ingests more oil causing the engine to run faster still. The engine management system has no control over it so the cyclce continues until the engine runs out of oil and either shuts down and seizes. The damage is catastrophic. On a manual car, so can sometimes halt the process by putting it in car, psuhing VERY hard on the brake, and dumping the clutch - hopefully stalling the process. On an auto, there is no way of stopping the process.

Ouch, I don't like the sound of that!

I must admit I hadn't got a clue what was going on in the video, but the way the owner was running around the car helpless made me assume it wasn't intentional! Poor car!

Someone on the comments says it can be stopped by blocking the intake? Is that possible?

Yes it is possible - but not easy. Blocking the intake removes the air needed for combustion. But with an engine running flat out, removing the relevant parts of the intake and blocking it sufficiently to stop air passing through is impractical.

i think that's a generic comment and in the older cars it prob was easier.

in my 90s land cruiser for example it had a nice round flex pipe about 4 inches in diameter goin into the air filter container which was a bit away from the engine, remove the metal clip and u could pull out the flex pipe and i suppose cover it with smething to totally kill the air intake. on the X on the other hand its rather complex to do smthing like that.

in any case like u say it can't be an easy task getting that close to a diesel engine runnin flat out and trying to remove parts!! :fuelfire:

more importantly i don't know wht the hell to do if this happens to me on the X!! being a diesel and an auto!

I remember once being asked what steps you take when you get diesel turbo runaway, and unfortunately the answer is 'big ones, a far away as poss'. The air intake is at the top of the front rail just below the bonnet (two long holes) but you have to be brave enough to try it, and have a couple of damp towels to hand! They're just out of sight at the bottom centre of this image, but the black plastic box is the air inlet trunk with its feed out to the left rear.

Fortunately it's still a rare event, but as said, usually catastrophic for the engine as it will be revving well above the red line and beyond control of either the ignition switch or DDE ECU. It normally stops when either the turbo or engine seizes, or the oil runs out.

There are You tube videos of it happening on a number of cars, so any diesel can suffer from it.

Drifting gone wrong was just sheer stupidity but funny.

The jump/barrel roll......omg.

Seen the parking incident one before.
