hi all newbee here ,i am seriously thinking of buying a 4,4 lpg 79k fsh 2004 etc etc .what should i be looking at fault wise and does the lpg system work fine on this engine thanks for any help you can give me kev

A quick look at the buyers guide in the E53 General Discussion section should help you out with a lot of what you probably need to know. Can't personally help with the LPG bit as all mine are oil burners.

Hi there

I have a 4.4i that was converted to lpg 6 years ago, just been in for a service with no problems,still going strong, cant tell any difference in performance when running on petrol or gas, but can certainly tell the difference in running cost. I would say, make sure you have it serviced when needed, Its not expensive and keeps everything running correctly.

I get around 220 mpg out of a tank, costs me around £50 to fill a 77 litre tank.

janette -thanks for that .please check my maths 77l =16.92gal 16.92/220=13MPG @.65LITRE LPG X 4.55=2.95 so if my maths is correct you are 26mpg from lpg for the same price as a gallon of petrol 1.30 litre

yeh thats correct kev, my old lpg used to come into its own on motorway as could get the petrol to sit at 25 mpg which is 50mpg eqivalant, however my oilburner ive got now £50/ £1.40=35.71litre /4.54=7.866 gallons @30mpg(my average) is 7.866 x 30=236miles!! just a thort but with the lpg you get the v8 raw however i found availabiliy limited

Welcome to the forum Kev,

Availability of LPG these days isn't really an issue, and also the technology has come on alot so that it works seamlessly with the cars original set-up. Find out when the LPG System was installed and when it was last serviced. Also try to find out what the manufacturer of the system is.

As far as the car is concerned, as X5Sport says, look at the buyers guide and this will give you some idea of things to look for...

All I can say is test drive a few and then go back to this one and if you still feel its ok then you should be alright. At that mileage for that car you shouldn't have too many problems.

The general feeling on the LPG forum I subscribe to is that the BMW V8 likes to have a top end system either Prins or BRC. But now Ive said that my 4.4 is running on a Romano system and that is a smooth as it should be. Ive got a 95 litre tank which holds 76 litres from empty and on mixed driving I usually get about 250 miles from a tank - Much better than my old Range Rover that would get 170 / 180 miles.

Non at all. Check for a smooth changeover from petrol to gas, you shouldn't be able to notice it.if it smells like a forklift truck on tickover then it's not running well. Try full throttle pull aways if it switches to petrol then its either in need of a tune or not upto the job, as I said earlier try and look for either a Prins or Brc system.
