6 speed transmission query.
6 speed transmission query.
Unsure to what is the norm. If driving in the manual mode with the 6 speed auto transmission, one has to use the shifter to go up gears manually before hitting the redline which is understandable. My query is when coming to a stop the gear box downshifts itself, to do with engine speed, revs, ok, this is understandable also to stop the stalling process. what gear does the box select once the vehicle comes to a total stop. is it Gear 1, 2 or 3, has the box got a default setting which it selects before the vehicle is in motion again?
Also, does this affect the 4.8 and the 3L diesel 6 speed trans?
Cheers.

Re: 6 speed transmission query.
I think in manual the gearbox will actually upshift when you hit the red line if not a little before.
On down changes when coming to a stop from memory you are left in second. Think this is also the equivalent of having a snow mode.

6 speed transmission query.
My 4.4 facelift 6sp auto will go down to 3 at a stop and happily pull away in that gear.
My old 3L e46 with 5 sp would go down to 2 at a stop so I suspect that all 5sp auto from 2000-2004 would do same.

if in manual mode doesn't it show you in the dashboard what gear your currently in? mine does.

Re: 6 speed transmission query.
semi auto gear boxes when in manual mode also shift up and down at the end of the rpm ranges. ie, for example, if ur in gear 3, and u slow down below the point where the engine is stable it will auto gear down to 2nd. similarly if u rev up close to the red it will gear up to 4th.
in mine if i come down to a stand-still it will gear down to 2nd (so normal kickoff is from 2nd). i can gear up all the way to 6th provided the engine is in the right rev range for the speed (if not it won't shift)
i assumed starting from the 2nd to be normal, cos: been a 4x4 where decent offroading skills could be called upon, in the absence of a low-ratio gear-box i suppose gear 1 is what'll come in handy.

Re: 6 speed transmission query.
Mine always used to pull away in 2nd unless 'Sport' mode was selected, then 1st was chosen. In manual, it would not come back down to 1st though if you I ignored the manual downshift. I had to select 1st manually, though there was little point as I need to upshift pretty quickly!

Re: 6 speed transmission query.
Ok so i'm aware of the box changing at the red line or just before in manaul mode. i meant you change manaully to avoid such high end reving, i;e redlining through the gears. Basicly if driving in manual mode in a civilised manner you wouldn't want to take the revs right to the redline to upshift, thats why i meant you upshift manually before you hit anywhere near the redline, Which makes obvious sence.
I am also aware the box doesn't downshift to 1st gear as this is such a low ratio gear. 1st can only be selected manually once the vehicle has hit the tolerances in the rev range. 1st is obviously a tyre muncher and only required in certain situations.
So when in the manual mode and comming to a halt at a junction, lights, crossing, the box downshifts itself within the rev tolerances understanderably so. And like a member has pointed out this gear shows up on the instrument cluster, but which is the norm, 2nd 0r 3rd gear?
cheers.

Re: 6 speed transmission query.
as per my previous 3rd in mine (4.4 facelift)
Re: 6 speed transmission query.
I appreciate the replies.
Excuse my lack of knowledge, i didn't realise the 4.4 come with a 6sp box also, stupid me
Mine too defaults only to 3rd gear, and i too can pull away in 3rd gear comfortably.
now i wonder why some boxes downshift to 2nd and some 3rd???
Thanks again for info people .

6 speed transmission query.
Looks like all 5sp revert to 2nd gear, all diesel also, but facelift v8s petrol revert to 3rd?
Kind of makes sense due to lower revving of diesel engines.
Can anyone else confirm disagree?
( is there such a car as a facelift petrol 3.0 btw?)

Yes. The change applied across the board and I think also coincided with the 4.6 becoming the 4.8 in the petrol line-up and the diesel going from 186bhp to 218bhp.
