Quick up-date in that since the oil change to nice clear golden Castrol Edge the blue smoke has almost completely dissappeared. It's still pretty cold so perhaps that gungy old black oil was partly to blame.
I also had a knock on the supension which turned out to be steering arms at £123 + Vat each and 3 hours to fit. That bumped the bill up a tad. It actually only had 1 knocking but I had both changed as the other wouldn't be far behind.

Re: Blue Smoke in start up
Glad it's been sorted and engine-wise was no worse than mucky oil. The suspension parts are a common failure/wear point.
So, off for some happy motoring now then eh?

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Blue Smoke in start up
i had the same problem of blue smoke on cold start ups last winter but no smoke at all during the summer , i had my wabasto heater enabled in September ready for the winter and since i have been using it on cold mornings the car doesn't blow any smoke at all on cold start ups as the engine is warmed up by the wabasto heater, i have been told its the ECU giving the engine a bit more fuel for cold starts so its nothing to worry about,
