Sorry guys, was in garage and forgot to log off. Thanks for the replys. I'll try the gearbox reset tomorrow Sanj, tried it a few months back and it did feel better then. X5Sport - no work near turbo and no metallic noises, I'll try the gears after I reset them tomorrow. Jaynana - that's exactly what was happening, foot hard down but the car would only give enough to get to sixty, no high revs and no shuddering like it was needing another gear. X5Sport - fuel pump could be to blame or maybe the fuel filter, used to have a gulf that suffered from lack of power that turned out to be the filter. Will let you all know how I get on on Friday. Thanks again

Sounds to me like limp home mode. Had similar in my 535d when the turbo mounting bracket had popped, meaning the wastegate was not operating properly. Try the earlier suggestions before a full diagnostic check at an Indy m8. Good luck/

Could this not also be fuel injector, but would have thought it would be all the time.

No dash message in my 535d when it happened, and that was a brand new car less than a year old at the time.

No message on mine either.......which is one of the areas that has always concerned me about the whizzy electronic monitoring systems in modern cars. The software isn't programmed in such a way as to pick up issues and flag them in all circumstances. Such as the gearbox going into 'limp-home' mode and that signal either not being sent, or not being correctly interpreted by the OBC and flagged on the display.

If a fault occurs and is logged by the systems, then at least it should bring some kind of information up, even if it's just a yellow light (it's still safe to drive type) to say you need to go to a garage. But I guess that's too expensive to implement - although with modern computer systems it shouldn't be.

Bring back the good old dash panels with voltmeters, oil pressure, coolant temp, turbo pressure etc. You could see things were wrong by a quick glance at the clocks if something wasn't in its 'usual' position. The X6 doesn't even have a temp gauge now! Just fuel level and 'economy'.

will the car accelerate fast upto 60mph then stop? or is it sluggish all the way? if the latter i would investigate for a detached or knackered vacuum pipe around the turbo and turbo vacuum reservoir area.

That's the car dropped off at the garage, will spill the beans tomorrow evening. If I don't have to sell the iPad to pay for it. Thanks again for all the posts

Just picked car up from garage, Good news is there was nothing major wrong. Turns out the garage in Newcastle where I bought the car last April had told me that the inspection 2 service had been carried out!.............Bull S**t, mechanic told me that he has never seen a air filter as dirty as ours. Full inspection 2 service was carried out and the car was also run through the diagnostic machine, only thing that showed up was a faulty glow plug relay. The very sluggish performance could of been down a number of things linked to the lack of servicing, the mileage is coming up for 70,000 so it was in dire need of it. Car feels alot better and the acceleration is good again. ( Even for a 3.0d before someone else says it). Cost was excellent too, not as bad as I was expecting. Happy X5 again!!! :D

Glad it's sorted, and that it was no more complex than air starvation. We were nearly right with the vacuum problem, but it was too much rather than not enough for controlling the turbo. :?

Bl@@dy cheating garages! Probably just reset the service lights, charged someone the money and went out for dinner on the profit.... :headbang:

i'm glad you got it sorted.so it ws just not enuf air through the filter? these garages have gone to the dogs!! u should complain to them, not that u'd get anything back but at least just so that they know it didn't go unnoticed.. or maybe they have a standard indy for these, who screwed them up, they may not be even aware..

glad you got it sorted.
all the more reason perhaps, for doing the servicing yourself. theres plenty of how to's on here for the not so technically minded.
theres nothing more satisfying than knowing youve done a good job yourself and saved a packet too!
