Rear screen wash
Rear screen wash
Hi there, first post here but was on a little over at the old X5 :driving:s site.
Just getting a dribble out of the rear nozzle on a 2003 model (fronts are fine), is this fed from the 2 pumps on the bottle & any tips to clear it?
(already cleaned the filters)
I have gone as far as removing the rubber seal round the rear nozzle but don't want to brake anything trying to get it off.
I tried a thin wire up it (Ooooo) but its not helped much.
Thanks in advance for any help

Re: Rear screen wash
If the fronts are fine, swap the pumps and see if the problem is still there, etc.
Was it working fine before?

Re: Rear screen wash
Thanks for the quick reply, yes was working a few months ago but hardly ever use them so probably crap has got stuck somewhere.
Just found this which may help if I need parts

Not sure if the rear nozzle justs pulls out but by the looks of it not a dear part if it does break (unless it breaks inside the next bit !)
I'll have a further look tomorrow evening & swap the pumps.

Re: Rear screen wash
Swap em first then, will make it clear if you have a blockage or a pump issue... Oh er missus!

Re: Rear screen wash
Right finally cleared the fecker !
Tried swapping the pipes about & the pumps were both working. Moved onto the rear pipe, removed the nozzle which was easy (it was the rubber part behind I had problems with before as it is buried in the tailgate & so didn't want to break it while tring to remove) had a poke about with a wire no sign af any blockage so moved back to the front. Tried firing a water hose up the pipe but wouldn't shift it (a very slight dribble if anything) then I tried a inflatable air mattress pump but no joy with that Finally as a last resort jammed up a small bore plastic air hose at work and blasted it with compressed air - This at last blew all the crap out
Now what's the best way to clear all the gunk from the inside of the reservoir !

Re: Rear screen wash
In the washer bottle the pumps push into rubber gromits. These have filters built in and get easily clogged. Remove the pumps and the gromits and clean the filters. Whilst these are out i put a hose into the washer bottle and just let it clean all the gunk out.

Re: Rear screen wash
Just to add to what squeaky has said I used puriclean in my washer bottle over night then when i blasted it with the hose it shifted all kinds of shite
Re: Rear screen wash
Cheers, yes I had the filters out & in fact had the whole reservoir off & hosed it but its still pretty manky where the hose didn't hit. Puriclean sounds just what I need - Thanks.
Re: Rear screen wash
I used a bottle brush to clean the washer tank, because it was full of muck stuck to the sides.

Re: Rear screen wash
Pull out the pumps and the filters are attached to the rubber plugs that the pumps push in to.
Re: Rear screen wash
smeeagain,
Further to above comments you first need to use a socket set to undo & remove the washer reservoir bottle then lift it clear.
Easier if less fluid in when you do this & from recollection I disconnected the wires to the pump first.
Common sense stuff really - pitfalls could arise by losing fixtures/nuts & from forcing or over tightening when refitting.
Difficulty level............. 1/10 (maybe 2/10 for those with fat fingers on a cold day).

Re: Rear screen wash
Just to add you dont necessarily need to remove the bottle, I didn't . But then I do have long alien fingers
Re: Rear screen wash
Yes.................Thinking about it I chose to clean out the bottle at the same time figuring leaving muck in bottom of bottle would be counter productive to my efforts.
