Water in trunk

Anyone have any ideas where to start with water in the trunk, had my bm54 repaired not long ago, was driving in some really hard rain 2 days ago, and the speakers started playing up then gave up completely, thought was just the bm54 playing up again, so just been out to remove it and it's swimming in about 2 inches of water.
The compressors wet the battery's wet, but there's no obvious sign of where the waters getting in. Any one had the same problem? Oh and to top it off the self level suspension inac had come up also, reckon it may have something to do with the water?

You need to get someone to sit in boot then hose &/or pressure wash rear of the car.

Prime suspects......

Failed, twisted or poor fit rubber tailgate gasket seal.

Bump stops too high.

Poor seal to tail light cluster.

Split rubber to rubber that surrounds tailgate button and plate lamps or bad seal to same.

Other possibilities would be bumper underpinnings have been off sometime and poor seal.

Underneath cary you will see a palstic box - that's what the battery sits inside - battery inside a plastic case that sits in that box.

You could have a loose battery vent pipe or underside damage.

Rear washer pipework I suppose could cause an issue though I have not heard of same.

You need to take everything out asap, spare, compressor lifed tomone side, battery, tray, modules etc, dry it out & find that leak asap. if not traced above floor level then experiment hosing from underside.

If you have multiple component failures from water it could cost hundereds of much more depending on the damage.

Worst case cenario stuff but you need to act a.s.a.p.

Oh and watch out in case the liquid is battery acid vapour - check battery is fitted and vented properly - one end to vent pipe & opposite end capped & sealed.

Hopefully your compressor hasn't sucked water in or it will be knackered now, that happened to me on an old 523 e39. Easy to DIY but expensive.

Hi, thanks for the replys, think the compressors fine.... Well still making a noise!! Is that a good sign? Hoping it's a dodgy fuse!

Have taken everything out resting in a nice dry spot. Not battery fluid. Have given it all a good clean out, was pretty clean water so thinking it's coming from the top somewhere.
Getting the other half to sit in the boot while I hose it down, ( may even Give her a wash while I'm at it, she's looking more brown than black!) I'll let you know how I get on.

I've read through nearly every post but have not come across this one yet, kinda making me think the boot got left ajar at some point, well hoping that's all it is!!!

Will still make a noise even if it's got water in it, unfortunately water doesn't compress very well. I got a second hand compressor from quarry motors(BMW breaker in Sheffield-well known) for around £180

It can be quite hard to identify exactly where it is coming from without removing a lot of panelling. In my case the water was coming down the left from the top and it turned out to be a manufacturing fault in the panoramic roof frame which was then replaced under warranty - apparently it would have been a £3,000 job!

Your problem sounds a little bit more major than the one I had - but worth checking...

When I bought my X5 it was in the middle of the really bad snow we had.
There was a large amount of melting snow on the roof.

Anyway, when I got the car home and gave everything a thorough checking I found about 10mm of water in the well of the right hand side storage cupboard thing in the boot. Where the subwoofer is on the higher spec X5s.

I found that the rubber seal covering the wiring that goes from the roof and into the tailgate at the top of the car was completely unplugged. I re-sealed this, and also checked the rear light seal on the right by removing it, checking the seal and re--seating it as the dealer had been mucking around in there just before we bought it sorting a tail light.

Hosed the thing down like mad. No leaks and never had any moisture in the car since and I've owned it 12 months now.

Worth a quick check.

Right found the issue! Had the hose pipe against the rear bumper in the middle, and literally all the water from the hose pipe went straight between the bumper and tail gate into the rear trunk through the 5 or so round holes in the body work located inside directly under the tail gate catch ( in the main body not the tail gate)
Had my bumper re sprayed a few weeks ago, some plonker caught the side with a trolley! Reckon I should have lived with the scratches..
Does any one have any idea what may have been left out? Grommet etc? Thinking must have something to do with it as was fine before!!!

Back to the idiots who did the job then...make sure that compressor is fine though, don't want it rusting away after there botch job and you footing the bill a few months down the line

and the electronics next to the battery, which sit even below the compressor

Take it back to the place that did the repair. Get them to sort it and sort out any issues with the compressor/battery/wiring/modules you may end up with.

As you open the tail gate just underneath (above the bumper) there's a rubber seal in the middle of the car on the main body that has been used for the wires to go through for the row hitch.
This was not in hence lots of water!!
Took her back to spray shop, but they said they didn't touch it! Hmmm was fine before, must be just one of coincidences that mysteriously happen !?!
So I've managed to get it back in ( long nose pliers and small fingers help)
All siliconed up and no leaks.
Compressor fine, but bm54 not very healthy, sent it for a hopeful repair..... Again ( the amp went wrong in November !) but nothing he can do with it, so new one arriving tomorrow, let's hope that's all that's wrong. I keep you all posted.
