Near empty. It was acting like it was full to the neck because it was bubbling up the neck and running out.

That's bad. I was hopin to check what gareth82 said, ie if it works when near empty on mine, so that's no good, no point waiting for my 3/4 of diesel to run out.

What u see is exactly the same as my symptom. My great suspision is the pipe that allows air to escape as u fill up. That might be blocked, making air rise up through the filler neck, pushing some diesel also up the neck with it, as u pump diesel in.

Unfortunately its sunday, next weekend ill try checkin that out.

Hi . Removed the o/s rear wheel then the under arch trim to expose the expansion breather tank ? Unbolted it to find a valve mounted on the top that was not passing either way .There is 3 breather pipes going into the tank that i removed so i could check to see if there was any pressure build up,i just sucked them by mouth to find no vaccum(all good)I tried filling up from a can with the breathers all disconnected and there was no problem. So the expantion tank valve is the problem. I didnt price another one ,just drilled a hole next to the valve to allow every thing to breath, Jobs a good one :driving: Can even fill it up without standing for ages. Cheers Ian

cheers mate, good job and makes me feel confident i'd also get there :happyclap: this will immensely help me with the job, hopefully this weekend.

i'm sure i'd have a better feel once i access this myself. i suppose any info beforehand will help.

From the below image can you tell me which one had the problem and where you drilled the hole?

The pipes you are looking at are the three breathers that i was talking about the faulty valve is on top of the tank .you will see it after you remove the two 6mm bolts (10mm )spanner size,in figure r16 o234 number 1 looks like it but my car did not have a pipe on it .I drilled the hole (8mm) next to the white one way valve.
