Further update :

i got a call from the Indy , they said they ran some further tetss and the main high pressure fuel pump (£1000 part) is ok with retaining and contsnat pressure.

they have identified the fault to be the 'pre fuel pump' so WD have ammended the costings and it has been replaced -

£228 incl VAT for the part , WD pay £154 i pay the £77ish inc Vat (30% parts contribution due to being over 75k miles)

+ £25 excess = £107 ish for me to pay in total.

the pump has been replaced and the indy have told me that its firing up as it should with no further fault codes showing. thye did say that i can pick up if i wanted to but they would prefer to keep it tonight and fire it up in the morning on cold to test everything again to make sure.

i agreed and thought this would be best so picking up tomorrow 10:30am.

@ BSTEW - sound as if you do have the same issue, i would personally replace the relay to the fuel pump first as it only costs £10 from BMW and may be the cause. I did do this in mine and it wasnt , it was the actual pump but better to elimate it at £10 only.

The indy i have used is not my usal its 'Peter Michaels' in bolton - not overwhelmed by them , they did have all the BMW equipment etc and the main reason is that WD pay them direct (approved) so i dont have to pay out and then claim back (nightmares getting money back off WD in the past _ worse than the expense dept at my work!) thats why i prefered to leave the car for a cold start to check as i want it sorted properly.

Just had the codes read and the diagnosis is a lazy pre fuel pump so yes it is the same problem.
I am going to change the relay as advised just to eliminate it and if it's not that get it sorted in the new year as I have an RAC warranty.
