4.4 auxillary heater

Ready for next year I'm in the process of investigation fitting a Webasto to my 02 4.4.

I've seem to remember reading somewhere that these have been fitted to the petrol models locating at the area deep down in the area behind the headlight but can't seem to find owt on realoem or TIS.
Anyone give me any pointers ?

I can feel a monster how to picture story forming .......I don't see why all you stinky diesel boys should be the only ones toasty warm on a cold winters day.

What actually is the Webasto heater?

I've seen a label on an item in the engine bay that says 'Webasto' but I don't know what that means...

I also don't have any manuals etc for my car...

??? I've got a 4.8 with Aux Heater and the heater is certainly not "deep down behind the headlight", its high up on the right side, well, just right of the middle of the engine bay when you are standing in front of the car facing the engine,, just under the bonnet.......... Some petrol models came with the Webasto factory fitted, albeit at a very high price. There are some threads on the US forum, Xoutpost, re fitting same and I believe our old forum had some info too, someone fitted one with success. Have also seen some fitted onto petrol P38 Range Rovers- apparently, the old Rover 75 diesel models have a perfect Webasto unit if you can find one at a breakers.

Manuals are available to download free- there is a post on here somewhere with the links, or on xoutpost as well. You can also sometimes buy proper BMW printed manuals onlione via ebay.

Nice work, thanks Condor. I'll have a good dig around on the xOutpost and see what I can find. One of my old associates on the landyzone forum fitted one to his P38, I think that was from a Rover 75. I may give him PM.

That's the guy I was thinking of - he described the fitting quite well. I was on Landyzone for years (had the Rangey for 6+ years!)

Gav Briggs is who I'm thinking of. I take it you've seen the light too with the X ? My P 38 has just been sold today, proceeds going towards a new kitchen (and some mods to my x )

So i'm guessing the Webasto is some sort of heater on a timer or something that you can program to turn on to warm up your car before you get in it.

I have seen an X5 with Nav and had 'AUX HEATER' (or something similar) on the Nav screen. Does that mean that mine (without Nav) won't work?

And how does it not drain your battery? Sorry for the questions, this is all new to me

A quick search on auxiliary heater will answer all your questions. Its been well covered on this and other forums, trust me on this, I think I've read about 2/300 posts about this in the last few days.

That's the one I loved my P38 - had it for 6+ years and was luckier than many (although I did look after it!) and avoided slipped liners and cracked heads and the like but she was getting very old, really, and at 140 000 miles perhaps operating on borrowed time........ The clincher for me was having to work a very long distance from home for a year and do long cross country hauls, and my partner's back just didn't cope with the Rangie seats which are definitely no comparison to the fab BMW ones.......

Initially I bought a 3.0i X5 as it was a hurried purchase and I'm not a Diesel loving gal......but the auto box did worry me a little as it had the dreaded cold start in Drive lag and I part exchanged it 6 months later for the 4.8 that I absolutely love, overpriced as it may have been, from Hexagon. Hopefully a keeper for as long as we had the Rangie........

Forum search will answer the questions........as well as some of the guys who've done the mods. You've got an oil burner, so the Webasto is standard, to preheat the glow plugs or whatever it is diesels require but the "parking heater" (the mod that makes the interior nice and toasty) is generally not enabled - apparently a Maplin sourced remote will get it working with a bit of modification. Search and read!!!

Thanks to A previous post by Condor with a nice picture, I am now on the trail of a Webasto Thermotop
C. The magic word I have discovered is Benzin indicating it is petrol powered as opposed to the more common diesel. The best place I have found for a supply of these is eBay.de the German version of the popular auction site. I have a few on my watch list prices ranging from €50 for old beasts to €3/400 more common. I will update as and when I get my hands on one.

That's the one! A Thermotop - the labelling on mine says just that. If you're lucky Gav's P38 is probably only worth about £300 now, so worth buying just for the heater

Just another quick update - have discovered two plugs in the right location that match exactly the ones pictured on various installs - a good result as it means my old girl is pre-wired so fitting should be a doddle !!!

It would also seem that the middle of winter is a bad time to buy a heater.... Ive been outbid on several now.
