Steering Wheel Judder under braking
Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
no, no balancing at kwik fit ..... although they have vulcanised the odd tyre for me. And yes I don't think it is balancing either else the wobble would show up at other points other than just braking

Steering Wheel Judder under braking
Balance would be at say 60mph to say 65mph, not usually under braking.

Steering Wheel Judder under braking
It's a classic lower suspension arm bush tell tale... I'd get a second opinion from another Indy. Not using BMW Care in Leeds are you?
Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
It only judders under braking and drives fine all other times. I will find out the diagnosis soon enough as it's in there today!

Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
I get the judder the first time I brake. After that everything is fine. May be a warming up thing in my case?
Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
Well she passed the MOT first time which must be a first for any car of mine!
They didn't have time to thoroughly investigate the wobble today but I am going to get the wheel balancing checked again anyway as I am sure things got worse since the 'clunk'

Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
Giblets, i've just discovered i have the same issue (did a 750+mile round trip after xmas through new year, from london to wales, cornwall and back)
when i apply brakes whilst traveling at speeds around 70mph to slow down to around 40mph, the steering vibrates.
this does not happen when applying brakes at slow speeds.
can you pls let me know if balancing the wheels fixes the problem.
thx

Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
I had this sort of thing. Vibration under braking from speed tha went away when it slowed down
Servicng the brakes sorted it. I did change both discs and brakes......BUT I noticed one pad was wearing uneven. A good clean of the guides polished smooth and the removal of any notches from wear on the carriers too. The pads ears had made marks on the carriers (not serious) but you could feel them with your fingernail.I dremelled the faces on the carriers where the ears touched
No more wobbles
Disc/Pads/Carrier/Jamming....who knows....problem gone

Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
thanks mate, replacing the whole lot should obviously fix the problem
more specifically - i wonder whether its the disks that have gone bad..

not necessarily. Could also be caused by worn bushes, typically lower suspension arms.

Tis true an all
I posted up my experience mainly because the disk and pads looked a little odd, ECP were doing 30% off and changing brakes seemed easier (to me) than the arms, the wobble seemed to go away again If I stamped a lot lot harder on the brakes. The problem (for me) went away after the disc and pad swap
just sayin

Steering Wheel Judder under braking
If there is pad residue on the discs bad enough for it to cause judder under braking at speed you should be able to feel the pedal pulse if you ride the brakes at really slow speed if the soles of your shoes are thin and your feet are sensitive, alternatively if you have a dti clock dial or can borrow one you can check for run out on the discs
Re: Steering Wheel Judder under braking
cheers mate, i've noticed from many threads that you actually know these things well , anyways, i'll leave this problem for the moment untill i have to change the front brakes (i was told its only got a few more thousands left at the last check), ok i'm lying its actually cos my attention has diverted to 2 much more important or interesting matters, on 2 diff threads:
1. my diesel tank filler problem (this is a real prob)
2. scanner 1.4.0 (fun stuff here)
any help on those also appreciated. out of curiosity - where do yo u live btw, dirtymonkey? i'n in north-west london.
