Angel eyes replacing bulbs

Post by Pradaman » Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:15 pm

My wife's x5 has angel eyes , I think that's the correct name for them, they look like oven rings. One of the bulbs is out and only the sidelight is working! I want to get some better bulbs for it and see there are a large amount available! What has everyone else got? Do you get bright white or xenon looking bulbs and would have to be error free ones. Any advice much appreciated.

+1 for the HIDS4U. Never had any problems with them, and error free..

When you say only a sidelight on - those are the angel eyes on the X5. What bulb is out? Low beam?

Yeah it's a low beam bulb that is out. Are these easy to change?

Are these easy to fit and are they plug and play? Was thinking about getting a set instead of the standard halogen bulbs.

The angel eye bulbs are easy to fit as you just have to remove the cap off the back of the headlight to reveal the standard bulb.

I think that is pretty much the experience of most folks. The new BMW fitted systems use multiple LEDs in a ring so I don't expect anything other than that type of installation to work in the same way. Having read reports from all over the BMW World by those who have fitted various systems to their cars, it seems that there really is no option other than either a complex and expensive HID modification, or replace the complete light unit with an LCI version if that is even possible, and that is probably prohibitively expensive.

This may be why BMW offer the Philips DRL system with 4 LEDs as a retrofit. I've been looking at the DRL8 system as an option on my X6, but have not yet decided if that is the way to go. There is an LCI version of the X6 on the way and it appears to have full LED lighting rather than HIDs but that is only on the test mules so we may not actually get them on the final version. Needless to say retrofitting those would probably be both difficult and expensive!
