Now there's an interesting project. :) I have wondered myself what system in the car is being used. I've got them on the X6 and had just assumed that there was something connected to part of the steering that does the switching with an interlock as well as they stop working above a preset speed.

Well would't you just know it! There an EU Regulation covering their use too! UN-ECE-R 119. However I have found this little gem from VW that gives some idea of what's involved and it seems a little complicated to say the least. Yaw sensors and steering angle sensors and lord knows what all.

A passenger with a torch is the simplest choice methinks. Seriously though, it's an interesting litle challenge though.....

just a thort but on trucks the cornering lights come on with the indicator and bellow 20mph just that would be far easier to wire up

well instead of steering angle sensors, just wire up a relay to each fog and trigger the relay through the live output from the indicator, skip the speed sensor

Funny you should ask that, my mate recently got a brand new Golf company car that had cornering lights, he hated having one fog light automatically coming on all the time. The first time I saw it in the dark; I was sitting in my car outside his house and saw him coming down the road and turning into his drive, I honestly thought he had a foglight out, it looked....strange.

The final straw was when he saw the car's reflection (with one fog on) in a shop window as he was taking a corner through town, so he had my brother get the vag-com thingy out and disable it! :P

next thing you know after having an option like that added on a vehicle which did not come out of factory that way, is a challenge from a police stopping you for driving with your fogs on. i was pulled over by a local police for having my fogs on at 5 am on a foggy day in the area i live and not so foggy in the parking lot of where i work which is 3.2 miles apart from each other. i told him that there was a thick fog between the base and the village i lived at the time and he told me i should not be driving with them on. i said i am parked now and i will turn them off since i don't need them on anymore but i needed it till i entered the base. he said ok and drove away. i guess the problem he had with was i had HIDs on the fogs so it got his attention and he had nothing else to do. now i am hesitant on using my fogs even it is foggy outside just because they can just pull you over to remind you that your fog lights are on.

There have been some educational issues getting the Police used to cornering lights, but on the whole most should know of them by now. I do sometimes despair of some officers who seem to find ny excuse as a pretext for stopping people - though thankfully they are a very rare breed.

Fog lights should be used where visibility is impaired and is less than 100m if I remember my Highway Code. We had a Kent Traffic Car flash up 'Turn Fog Lights Off!' on the M2 recently even though they weren't even on, but the HID projector dip beams were. No other cars around us had them on either. Ah, the powers of observation eh?
