Steering Wheel Judder under braking

Post by Giblets » Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:17 pm

Hi all,

Just starting to notice some steering wheel judder under mid to heavy braking.

Would this be the pads, discs, or either that need looking at?

Any idea on costs from a local specialists for the diagnosed job?

Thanks

Hi Giblets, I had the same problem.
My brake pads were low (warning on dash) and my discs worn so I had them changed - they also changed the off side steering hub assembly as it had play in it.
Brakes are awesome now and no judder.
Total cost: £567 at my local independent.

Thanks all.
No worning lights on dash so could be the suspension arm bushes I guess?
Will ask garage to look when it's MOT'd.
If suspension arm bushes would this be an MOT fail point?

If the bushes are not too bad, they will come up as an advisory note.
If well worn - then fail.

I've had this issue - didn't come up at MOT yest the shudder is awful (under braking around 60mph). Pads and discs are new. Wheels are balanced. No-one - Indy BMW even Kwikfit can find the issue

Tempted to just punt it though its MOT on Monday and hope for the best then.

Can really do without a massive bill at this time of year obviously!

Steering Wheel Judder under braking

Post by dirtymonkey29 » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:18 pm

Wouldn't trust kwik fit to clean my windows!!!! Even the tiniest bit of play will translate on the road as a massive judder when braking forces are applied, your trying to stop a bid heavy machine quickly. If your suspension arms are new(ish) and were changed by a garage I would suggest they haven't been torqued up under load which is essential not to wear the bush out rapidly. Also quality parts make a massive difference over cheap pattern parts. I'd recommend lemforder. I learnt all this the hard way so hope it's of some help to you.

i meant to say that BMW Indy and Kwik fit CANT find the problem. I don't trust kwik fit either but they're often handy for a quick and free diagnosis as you can usually just drop in unlike BMW who will arrange you an appointment (and usually charge to inspect the vehicle)

I mean I don't trust them to do the work. Their diagnosis is usually sound though or at least to back up as a second opinion.and its free. And then I get it done somewhere else :)

Just rang my local specialist who thinks it might be an unbalanced wheel, which would make sense as I had 4 tyres changed last week and heard a clunk as I was driving away. Must have been one of the balancing weghts letting go!

Hopefully it is and will be a cheap simple fix  but if it was a wheel balance issue i would have thought that it would be doing it all the time not just under braking.
You didn't have them balanced at kwick fit did you lol....sorry smee couldn't resist :poke: ;)
