Learners to be allowed on Motorways

Post by X5Sport » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:31 pm

The Department for Transport has announced that it intends to allow Learner Drivers loose on the motorways before their tests - under supervision of an ADI. Family members/normal licence holders will not be allowed to be co-driver. It's a good idea I think - if the ADI requirement is maintained - as most new drivers will never have driven on a motorway until they have passed their tests.

There are more changes to come, including banning trainee ADI's from teaching student drivers - about time.

There are some scary statistics too.......according to the IAM & DfT, 62% of young, male novices think they're a better than average driver. One third of all occupant injuries/fatalities are in cars driven by young males between 17-24 and male drivers between 17 and 29 are TWICE as likely to be killed or seriously injured than the equivalent female group. No wonder insurance is getting so expensive for that group.

I know when I was in my teens/early twenties I used to think I was a Driving God, now in my fifties I know I am............. :P :fuelfire:

Fully agreed. My son got his license last week and has never been on the motorway. For me, that was part of my normal lessons and also part of my exam.

But then I was educated in NL, where the real driving Gods come from :driving:

So, in your fifties, hmm - cradle snatcher :poke:

Learners to be allowed on Motorways

I hope they don't plan on taking new drivers on the motorways, if this is done a week or so before a test then I agree. It will prob ease some nerves.

But me been the real driving god, just went on the motorway the first day I passed my test.

I have always believed that the driving exam should include motorway experience/driving, but not as it's being proposed.
I think firstly you should pass your test as per normal, but then you should be made to sit another test regarding motorway driving/rules, this is to include practical as well as theory.
But the motorway part should be paid for by the government, they are always going on about road safety, and come up with any excuse for getting more speed cameras in place, when, as we all know, a lot of accidents are caused by pure inexperience, not all, but a hell of a lot of them.
Just think about how long the driving test has been in, and just how much the roads/cars have changed and increased, but the test has changed very little.
So much could be done to make our roads a lot safer, and, reduce the number of accidents and fatalities, but unfortunately the main thing that is missing in some government depts. is common bloody sense.
I'll put the soap box away now.

Motorway driving is part of the pass plus scheme where an adi takes you on the motorway once a the test has been passed. I think that's better, unfortunately pass plus is only optional but covers a range of different types of roads etc and should be compulsory
