Help - Oil Leaking

Post by jeegnesh » Sun Dec 11, 2011 1:54 pm

Last two morning on start the X was making lots of whining sounds that stopped after 2 minutes.

Noticed Oil on the pavement where I was parked, checked the engine bay and the black bottle is caked in oil. What is that bottle and any advice or ideas?

that could be your oil filter housing, any way check if its tight, you ca allways unscrew it, and see, and replace it or if there is a gasket replace also. clean and check again,

As above reply. That's your oil filter housing. Have you checked it's tightened up enough? Should have the correct Nm torque stamped on the cap there. There should be a rubber O-ring that sits behind the cap's thread, perhaps that has failed causing leakage. Either way, unscrew it when motor has cooled a little and check this rubber ring... give it all a good clean... and replace at the right tightness. Then keep an eye on it. Might just need a replacement O-ring

Might be an idea to check your dipstick oil level too in case this has been going on for a while.

Haved you got the correct oil in? The whining could be the oil pump cavitating as the oil is a bit too viscous when it is cold. The noise might go away as the oil warms up. The cold oil might have overpressured the oil filter housing as well.

Help - Oil Leaking

Post by jeegnesh » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:14 pm

Oil is just above min. I am also sure this has happened over past 2 days, as my driveway has no oil but was parked elsewhere for last 2 nights and oil marks are there.

Don't have anything that's going to tell me regards right torque when righted back :-(

Oil is 5w-30 fully synth Comma Super-Z been in there since last service done 15k and 2 green lights to go yet.

Do u need special spanner as the housing has that huge black plastic nut head?

Went to a man with a torque wrench. It says 25Nm was about less then a quarter turn short. Cleaned up the housing ran it for a bit there and no leak.

So will change the O ring tomorrow. Still doesn't explain why so much came out the first time round.

If the o-ring doesn't solve it then you have a massive oil presure issue :(

New seal on, old one was not cracked but seemed thinner and very hard.
