Rev counter :(

Post by mattchubb1 » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:46 am

Ok so recently bought an X3, on the way home I noticed the rev counter was revving lower than it should.... Just been to the garage (independent BMW) and it needs a new odometer :( parts £520+vat... Then an hours fitting at £60... Really gutted that I've got a bill this early!

Just hope this bill value doesn't continue to other things!

That's a bummer, and right before Xmas too. Any warranty when you bought it?

What's the connection between the odometer and rev counter, or are they going to change the entire instrument binnacle unit?

I know the one in the X6 is just a complete electronic module with a data connector to the rest of the car systems and power but nothing else.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Well - im going to call them tomorrow - but the warranty im pretty sure is just engine and gearbox... and thats it.

Basically its one unit - so it would need to be odometer and rev counter - so therefore the entire instrument unit - which i think he said has a whole load of electrics for loads of stuff including the alarm... typically!

Might wait until after christmas - its not affecting anything else - just shows the revs at the wrong speed - and the fuel guage... but at least the miles left in tank works fine - and the petrol light still comes on at the right time..... hopefully get some christmas money to put towards it!

I'd be fuming. Where did you buy it from, surely you can take it back to them to sort out (or at least contribute towards)???

The only thing I can think of is a breakers yard; if it's not urgent then perhaps you could put the feelers out to see if there are any knocking around.

I bought it from a place in Coventry... little back street kinda garage... not the kinda place i would usually buy a car from - but the car checked out to be all fine.

Yeah i contacted a mate of mine who i went to school with (quite a few years ago) and he said that the only issue with second hand ones is that the mileage would be the mileage of the donor car.... but i will put some feelers out and will keep an eye on ebay!

And all the others cars details like bin coding and milage

It may be poss to use a second hand unit like we do with Ecus

How much lower is it revving as may just need recoding

Or its been put back together wrong as it may have been apart
