Turbo whistle

Post by jalfonse » Wed Nov 30, 2011 7:13 pm

I just had my 05 X5 remapped yesterday and the test drive went fine and all was good. I noticed today however that the turbo is much louder and coarser and I'm wondering if I've blown a turbo gasket or something? are these easy to get out and diagnose? anyone had this or something similar, thanks

Turbo whistle

Post by ITBarbie » Wed Nov 30, 2011 10:55 pm

Hi Jalfonse

I asked about the Turbo whistle when I had mine remapped well over a year ago and happy to say mines fine. Yes I do think it is slightly more audible after the remap however in retrospect I just couldn't help going faster and as I had the window open I could hear the Turbo clearly.

I do get a bit paranoid and I'm afraid I can't give you pointers on checking it, just my experiences :-)

That's perfectly normal as the map causes the turbo to spin up earlier and faster. Both my 330d and 530d became so much more audible after the maps. Loved it.....lol

Quick update, the turbo whistle was more than you'd expect from the remap, an inspection by an Indi garage has discovered the turbo outlet gasket (which joins the turbo to the aftercooler pipe) has blown. You can clearly see the mark on the gasket where the gas has been escaping. Hopefully that's all it is, the 3 part steel gasket is just a tenner and new bolts are 6 quid. They checked the bearing for play and looked for evidence of compressor wheel to housing contact and both seemed fine. The remap was only supposed to increase boost by 0.2 bar so I'm surprised that would cause a failure, possibly already weak.

0.2 bar isn't insignificant and can easily highlight weaknesses in various seals. Just so long as the noise isn't bearing related. I've just sold my Lotus Carlton and used part of the proceeds to find my recent X5 purchase so I'm fairly well educated on turbos after owning that for 12 years.

Lotus Carlton eh, now that wasn't a car for the faint hearted.

Did you have many troubles with it? I heard a few snapped the crankshaft?

They were prone to snapping the timing chain. A dodgy batch left GM and appeared in various 24v Carlton GSis, Senators, and some Lotus Carltons. And much later on, wear in the chain guides and tensioners could cause a breakage. Luckily the owners club developed a fix for this (and the one or two other design flaws). Mine was trouble free although I did proactively deal with potential issues before they occured. I miss that car !!!

Moi! Slate anyone? But you're absolutely right, WE do want piccies. :D :D :poke:

Been out in a Lotus Carlton a few years ago and it's still a very impressive beastie and long before the M5 became the machine it is today too.
