Dealer Gets It wrong

I accepted a fault on my bonnet when the car was new, which needed respraying (the bonnet). There was something under the clear coat that was horrible in artificial light.

They promised it would be fine etc etc, but required two resprays in the end and in addition, a few years later stone chips at the front would start to rust straight away whilst on non resprayed X5s it would not happen. Dealer does not want to know about it now.

In summary, I would not accept a car anymore that is not 100% correct and what I want.You will regret as "make do" does not work long term.

I think it depends on how important the aluminium look is to you. If you have set your mind on it make sure you have it.
If its not that important after consideration have a chat with the dealer over a sweetener to make you happy with the car as ordered by them.
On a different note I can't see why the glass has to be removed .

I know everyone feels diffrent on what looks best, but we prefer aluminimum look by a large margin over black.

pvr totally agree with you on not accepting unless 100%, once they got ur money they just don't give a sh1t.

I also don't want to do the "make do approach", because deep down I'll not be happy.

Mine is the former

Personally I would have preferred high gloss window surrounds too (like my old 535d) but it wasnt an option when I ordered mine

Don't know if it helps but looking at the instructions you don't need to remove or touch the pano roof just slide it fully open.
The rest of the job is very easy and should not be visible once done.

UPDATE

Dealers offered 3 options
1. Strip & fix aluminimum rails (obvious concerns)
2. Accept with black ( no sweetner yet discussed)
3. Will order another car with correct spec (7-10 week delivery again)

Car due in next week so will look at in the flesh then decide.

If its possible why don't you confirm with them if they are going to remove the sunroof glass and if not let them change the parts on the condition that you will not accept the car unless examined and 100% happy ?

Ooops. Must admit that rails and windows look better matched. I have the shadow as mine is carbon black.

I was at Vines Gatwick yesterday, there is a Monaco blue with black window surrounds and aluminium roof. I was not that keen on the combo though.

It looked "ok" but would be not something I would chose.

Personally like the look as the roof rails become more discreet in black. If it were a more major item they had got wrong I would definitely not accept it and just wait on a new order going through. In this situation I would actually accept it as I personally don't mind the look and look to get a large chunk of money back.

If it were the other way round as pvr described then it would be a different view from me and I wouldn't like it.

As you say, once you see it make your decision as only you and your wife can really decide on whether the overall look is acceptable to yourselves.

Was at dealers today as they have a siver e70 with aluminimum on windows and shadow black rails on roof (this is actually the default setting when ordering and must be ticked to change in the options list to reverse)

TBH it's not the end of world as the black shadowline rail still matches the black part on the centre pillar section & wing mirrors, however this was on a silver car not space grey as ordered.

I agree with you it does look more subdued and not as "blingy" as aluminimum, which is no bad thing when parked in the shopping centre.

I think initially there is a big disapointment in the mistake by the dealer, but the rest of the car is as specced & its not as if it transit damage or wrong paint colour which obviously is a major issue. I'm still not comfortable on the reworking of a factory built car. So once viewed & if we are satisfied that a sweetner makes the car look better

It could be option 2, alternatively option 3 if we are not.

Already got service pack in deal.

The way I cost the work to change roof rails;
Â£200 side per rail (Â£400) plus say 4-5hr labour(Â£100hr = Â£400+),
so that around Â£800 to Â£900 retail cost, so sales section & service dept usually work as seperate cost centres & bill each other for work (on paper anyway), therefore cost to sales section to rectify is @ Â£600 or so as they will not be paying retail.

Was looking at RTI insurance & a new child car seat anyway so if thats given gratis to accept car (If we like/can live with it) then it would be a good start to soften my face

If the dealer had to reorder then there is a cost involved to them as they are left with my original order to sell, so they may also be considering that. Put it this way we should be clear whats happening by this time next week

UPDATE

Car delivered from Thorne VPC this morning. Had a look and did not think it looks too bad in black shadowline, so after a bit of negotiation decided to accept it as dealers conceded to adding a few additional freebies.

Here are some pics, car has still to be fully prep of course, pick up date end next week.
