few niggles with my new car

Post by karllap » Thu Nov 24, 2011 9:20 pm

Hi,
I got a 2001 x5 last week which I am really happy with but it does have a few niggles

1: Brake judder. I have read quite a few posts on here about this and have various answers, just thought I would put all the info I have on here and see if you think the same as me which is warped disks
I get quite a bad continuos judeer through the peddle slightly and also through the peddle. It happens at all speeds but the faster I go the more violent it is.
It only happens when I lightly touch the brakes and continues to happen until I either press quite hard or I stop. I have even pressed the brake lightly with my left foot and accelerator with right going at a continuous speed and the wheel continuus to wobble hence why I think it is the disks

2: Tailgate knocking. The is an annoying rattle comeing from the tailgate as if its not shut properly. Is there a way of adjusting it or is there a common problem with something coming loose?

3: Climate control. Sometimes I have to put the temp right up to get it to blow warm, its as if its reading that the temp inside the cabin is warmer than it is and its trying to cool it down. Is the a temp sensor or something like that that I need to clean?

4: The little bracket thing that holds the parcel shelf in place (the bit at the end of the rail that comes of with the parcel shelf) is missing. Do you know if I can buy these seperately or woudl I have to get a full parcel shelf?

Thats it, nothing major but just a few niggles that get on your nerves (or mine anyway)

Items 1 & 2 can't help with, but there's been a bit of discussion about what it could be - warped discs, failing bushes etc for the brakes. And yes you can adjust the tailgate but I can't remember which bit does what and can't check coz I've now sold mine...

Item 3 could be low refrigerant level as this can cause some odd faults - hot and cold! Also check that the knurled wheel in the middle of the front upper vents is set on it middle position and not any of the blue dots. Are you in 'Auto' mode as well on the A/C? The system needs checking annually and topping up approx every three years, especially if it does not get used much. Does your car temp guage get into the middle once the engine warms up?

Item 4, not sure but have a look at Realoem.com and use the last 7 digits of your VIN in the 'Serial Number' box to bring the right parts up. You will probably find it under the vehicle trim section (if in picture drill down mode).

I'll go for Item 2 then - try some electrical tape around the lock in the lower boot lid. Just wrap it round that catch - worked for me.

Make the catch have to bite that bit tighter. Oh err!

Welcome along....just speculation but the wobble could well be worn drop link bushes.

I second this as it worked for me too :-)

It may well be the links as I had mine replaced but I got a slight knocking not so much a wobble.

Funny you should say that, I looked this morning whilst I had good light. It looks like there was some kind of plastic coating or something around the catch pin that has worn of.
I will try your tip over the weekend.

Thanks

Seems to be a minefield this wobble thing!

Using my vast knowledge of mechanics (of which there is very very little). I would have thought if it was bushes it would just be a bit of a wobble when I first apply pressure and not constant if I keep the same pressure on the pedal, also if I press harder the wobble seems to stop.
I am probably talking out of my backside to be honest but it doesn;t make sense to me that it would be the bushes.

Highly unlikely that you have warped discs. You would need to really generate some serious heat to do that.....more likely to be high spots on the disc from stopping at traffic lights and having you foot on the brake. Brake pad material is softer than the disc so when there hot and the pads are pressed against them there is some transfer of material that then cools when you drive off leaving a high spot. There is a company that can skim the disc while still on the car, assuming this is the issue. You could do with getting a dti clock on them. Is your mpg down at all? If the pads are dragging on the disc It's will be down a bit. Might be a sticky calliper or even a worn bush somewhere in the front suspension components.

#2 rattley tailgate is most likely the bump-stops in the rain channels, visible when the top half is open. The rubber compresses and hardens but they can be adjusted (out) to take up some slack.

If the rubbers are shot it's a now a complete new (superior) unit but they cost c£50 each and need a lot of trim removed to fit them from inside the body. Stupid but true

As mentioned, the tailgate rattle can be fixed by adjusting the stops in the rain channels. Loosen the torx screw in the centre and wind the the stops out anti clockwise. Only do it a little at a time otherwise you will end up running into issues with the catch and the release mechanism.

I would be 99% sure your judder is discs..

Re brakes, does sound a bit like disks to me, do you know if they are OEM or pattern parts?

Re tailgate, are the two small plastic guides in position where the catch enters the lower tailgate section. Thought I could remember someone saying that if one of those is missing, it can cause the tailgate to rattle.

Thanks for the help everybody.
Brakes, I am pretty sure that it is the disks or pads after reading the replies. WIll replace them when I have chance
Tailgate was exactly as suggested, un wound the 2 rubber stoppers a bit and no rattle
Climate control seems to have sorted itself out!
Will keep an eye on ebay etc for a broken parcel shelf or at least a cheap one as the part comes with the parcel shelf

Thanks for the help everybody
