Ironically I had previously used Nige’s cracked manifold thread for pics etc to aid me with the glow plug job and so checking it again (thanks again Nige

on further investigation the end port closest to the egr pipe was very slightly out of line.[/quote]
Just seen this. Glad my photos helped

Mine started blowing shortly after too, exactly the same issue as yours, it was ever so slightly out of alignment. The welding obviously distorts the manifold.

Yeah the photos were a massive help for me fella

With hindsight i should have skimmed the head and saved some cash but at the time after putting it all back together once i didn't want to have to do it all more than once more so i went with a new part in the end.

Mine has cracked again..
Started with exhaust smell in cabin when sat in traffic. Been getting worse recently, so it looks like I need to remove it again.

Anyway, instead of buying a new steel manifold (I`m not bothering trying to repair mine again), I`m thinking about getting one of these cast manifolds instead.

Ebay link to Cast Iron Manifold
£270, but as it`s cast, it should last much longer without the chance of cracking again. I`ll be getting the bits ordered in the next week or so and tackling the manifold change.
I can hardly wait....

If anyone wants any photos taking whilst I`m doing it, let me know now, it`s no bother to take a few snaps whilst doing the job.

How did you go fitting the new cast iron manifold? Did you take any pics?
I read that's its possible to remove the exhaust manifold from underneath, without removing the injectors or intake, has anyone tried doing it that way?

apologies for reopening a fairly old thread, but it is exactly the same topic as I wish to discuss.
I have the cast iron manifold as posted by Nige. They are sold for around £130 now, with gaskets and nuts which is a real bargain for a brand new unit. The gaskets were labelled as E60, E70 X6, etc., but the seller assures me they will fit the E53 and its just that BMW use the same part no. for multiple models. I tend to trust him as he has fantastic feedback and has sold tons of these, even offering a fitting service (Yorkshire).
My indy has fitted this today, and I have my performance back!

However, there is an issue. on blipping the revs, I am getting a screech/squeal coming from the engine bay. Do you think this could be the fitment or misalignment of the new manifold/gaskets? Or could it be something else (from the above list in this article) not quite fitted back properly? I "think" I can smell fuel in the cabin also, suggesting some leak/escape, but that could be me putting two and two together.
The screech sounds painful and happens at about 1,000 rpm when you press the pedal then disappears as the revs rise.
I am due to take it back tomorrow and they will strip it back down and try to resolve, but I am not convinced they know what to look for.
Any ideas from helpful folks most gratefully received.
MANY THANKS.

Seems my diesel manifold has now sprung a tiny leak too. Dealer price seems exorbitant and reading above there seems to be some "cast iron" version doing the rounds...any opinions?
I'm going to the states very soon...is it worth putting one in my baggage from over the pond from a Florida dealer?

Certainly been comments about the poor BMW quality compared to a decent CI type.

They don't use that Diesel engine over there so you may have an issue bolting it on?

Darn it...I was rather hoping to cash in on the exchange rate...perhaps there's something else I can buy...hmm
As for the manifold I see there are CI ones around...and few fakes it seems too. Seems like the part is the least of the issue with the stupid access issues...again

It's honestly not a bad job to do. And for the price of the cast iron manifolds, relatively inexpensive. I did mine a couple of months ago with no real issues (although now I'm about to sell my lovely X5 as I've bought an E64).

I see on ebay there are a few CI manifolds sold as E60 (I think) as well as E53 and a few of the adverts suggest beware fakes or "old model" ones
I might be tempted to buy the "right" CI one then find someone to fit it....whatever the "right one" is
Is it allowed for someone to point me at an ebay link to the correct one>?
Facelift diesel 54 plate e53 if it matters
I think I saw a brummie based one but not the yorkshire one mentioned?

The Yorkshire one supplied mine from my recent thread. He does fitting as well (£300 all in is what he offered me) if your localish. It's a 3-4hr job so quite reasonable if you don't fancy attempting it yourself.

Have you got a link to the supplier/fitter please?
I take it £300 was supplied AND fitted?
Scrub that....I think I found it?

Any advice on the going rate for install? Thinking of buying the manifold from ronin1988 on eBay and asking someone to fit.
Cheers, Matt
