I used a small plaster knife ( if that's what you call them) and a flat head screw driver. After you slip the knife under one side you use the flat head screwdriver and the little rubber grommets pop out. It's just there is so flipping many it takes a while but worth it.

I was thinking about doing exactly the same thing with the wire wool. Was wondering what to use to seal them again though? Vaseline is ok I have read somewhere but I imagine this just attracts crap to stick?

At least with the rubber grommits gone, I could just use the polisher machine to do them with the usual cleaning products. Otherwise it kills your fingers.

As Pewters said, as long as you keep on top of them with a regular coat of wax then they'll stay as good as your elbow grease has made them. For a more permanent solution, masking tape out and a satin finish clear lacquer coat would properly seal them.
