Biofuels.............updated

Post by X5Sport » Fri Nov 04, 2011 2:03 pm

There was a thread running last year on Biodiesel, started by MartyVFR, and as I've just seen an update on Biofuels in this week's Auto Express (Issue 1190) which covers all biofuels, I thought I'd add a new thread....which may be of interest especially to the petrol community.

The DfT are looking to bring in E10 Bio-Petrol where the amount of Ethanol in it increased from the present 5% up to 10% from 2012. This will in particular effect mainly pre-1993 cars, but also some newer models as they cannot use this mix so beware!! Some BMW engines made pre-1998 will only work with up to E5 fuels. If affected you may have to use the Premium 'Super Unleaded' instead, although there are discussions about altering that in 2013. Super unleaded can cost 8ppl more!!

The DfT statement apparently is reported as being that the use of E10 should not affect the operation of modern cars "with the exception of direct injection vehicles". I thought there was a drive for petrol cars to go to DI rather than indirect injection nowadays?

Diesel fuels are currently unaffected and remain at the current B7 (7% Bio in the fuel blend). Introduction of E85 or E100 fuels in the UK was abandoned in May 2011 due to grant cuts. Good thing too as no BMW engines can use it - or couldn't at the time.
