I'm back.

Post by Hammy » Sat Oct 29, 2011 12:10 pm

Just back from 2,000 mile euro road trip in the X5, including 900 miles in one hit yesterday.

Cracking holiday, first long trip we've done in the car and it was faultless, and bloody comfortable to. The performance is also suitably amusing on the autobahn.

The winter tyres have seen ther first snow too, no problems at all. Next trip is the first week of March, so they'll really get a work out then.

Stop it ... I really want to go back to the mountains but not had a chance yet this year.

Lovely over there.

I know what you mean with the winter tyres though, it was very reassuring driving on pure ice in the mountains and they just never moved the wrong direction.

Our place is on the Hausberg in Garmisch, you literally cross a ski run, pass between permanently sited snow cannons and under the cable car wires to reach the farmhouse where our apartment is. Yes, that means we have to go DOWN the mountain from the house to catch a cable car up to the top. Should be entertaining come March  I've got a picture of the "driveway" somewhere...about a 1 in 3 climb with a 90degree right-hand turn halfway up, between 100 year old trees.

I have often thought about a place somewhere, but have always been concerned about the upkeep of a remote place and the "have to go there" feeling.

On the other side, it would never be booked when you want to go :)

Must revisit this thought again, especially as I am not comfortable with banks holding my money now ...

We're very fortunate, our place was actually my mother-in-laws home, and where my wife lived until she was 13. When my mother-in-law passed away earlier this year we were asked if we'd like to continue to lease the apartment, in Germany most people rent/lease rather than own their homes, at the same price as Hilde was paying - lets just say the rent is the same now as it was 20 years ago. The apartment itself is actually contained within the first floor of a working farmhouse, so it is well looked after in our absence (my wife grew up with all the people on the farm so we are considered family), someone goes in and checks the place every week for us, plus they go and switch on the fridge, heating etc for us a day or two before we arrive.

Garmisch itself is beautiful, and we get treated as locals when we're there, even me with my dodgy Bavarian (having a Bavarian badge on the car, a reg number that can be mistaken for a Garmisch plate and "My heart beats Bavarian" in Bavarian on the bottom of our numberplates helps )

There used to be, and I kid you not, a Wank Garage (no longer exists, the site is now a wine retailer) but I can't find the picture right now. One of the mountains next to Garmisch is called The Wank (pronounced wonk), therefore you go up the Wank by using the Wank Bahn, then at the top you go for a beer at the Wank Haus....

I have only been there once, but have good memories. For me, it was obviously an easy drive as I was living at the right side of the channel whilst studying.

More pics available of car and environment? :)
