Winter / Summer wheel storage
Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
@snipez999: Did you go for the BMW tyre totes / felts? If so are they any good? I've emailed a seller in the US about these and have been told they've had plenty of buyers for X5/6 wheels and no complaints.
@X5Sport: Which ones do you think you bought, the black/yellow ones (quote 30kg limit) or the grey/red ones (quote 40kg limit)?

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
The design has changed but I think it was the 30kg version as that was all that was available a year back. I haven't seen them since Feb/Mar as my wheels are in storage with BMW at present.
I do like the idea of the BMW Totes, and I can't understand why BMW have yet to offer them here. I will probably get a set too if they're not excessively expensive and the shipping costs are sensible. I need to get a set for the Mini's 18" summer wheels too.
The part numbers for the OEM Bags don't appear on any current systems so I can only think they are a market specific item in the US Only.
Whichever version you choose I would not recommend using the handles to pick these babies up - I think they're over 40kgs each with tyres fitted. All I know is I put my back out again just trying to change one!! Tother half, bless her, had to take over, and she's only 5'2" so it was a comedic struggle...

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
They do weigh a tonne! Must confess I'm slightly concerned that they're currently stored in a kind neighbours' garden shed, having rolled them though her house (well wrapped up) and then down some iron steps to the garden. I'm now concerned as to how the heck I'm supposed to get them back up - they nearly bowled me over a couple of times getting them down !!

Winter / Summer wheel storage
I got the tyre totes in mail as well as the skid plates i ordered. Unfortunately there isn't a link i can provide for the items i got cause i dealt with the dealership personally. Dealerships in stateside mostly not wanting to ship overseas reason being that it could jeopardize their dealership status thru bmw since there are bmw dealers here as well but since i have a US military adress here in UK the sale looks like in states and the items are exempt from
The customs fee. I am planning on switching to winter wheels and tyres before november so i'll take pics of the totes how they cover the20" wheels i have. if anyone needs help with stateside order let me know i canhelp you out as much as i can. I also ordered the full front side control arms, sway bars and ball joints for my 4.6is cause in mot they said the control arms had slight play in them. The 10 piece kit cost me £190 for everything inluding shipping from stateside. They quoted me £55 for each control arms here in UK. So when i get the arms the whole front end will get replaced with fresh arms. I changed the rear ones on mot in may so it should have a firmer ride

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
@kkodal78: thanks for your reply. Do you think the tyre totes are strong enough to be used to carry the wheels by the handle, or do you suspect the handles would pull off like X5Sport found?

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
from a quick look i don't think that i would trust to hang the wheels with covers. it does seem strong but i would use a strap or something else to hang it.it is connected by a velcro and also is adjusted by the velcro...once i get the wheels in them i will take the pics to post.. my garage is an oversized one so i do have enough room to park and store stuff in it so i just have to put them in one corner till next spring.

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
My totes and felts arrived within a week of ordering Stateside via a stealer on Amazon.com
Swapping wheels round tomorrow so my detailer guy can treat the new and old ones whilst he is here.
Got my winters sprayed satin black and they look very smart off the car; pics of on the car look to follow along with a review of the totes/felts.
Total price for totes and felts shipped here was 130 USD (54 USD expedited shipping as I wanted them for this weekend).
BMW Roswell are the dealership there; the parts guy comes from Cheshire originally (small world)

@kkodal78, @snipez999: Do you think the totes are strong enough to carry a wheel in? I'm not looking to store the wheels hanging up, but need to be able to carry the wheels up some stairs without the handle breaking off and the wheel breaking my foot and then destroying everything in its path!!

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
Even if you have a small garden you could dig out the ground then sink one of the plastic garden bins into ground and keep wheels in there, then put a plant pot on top. Lot of digging though, & soil increases in volume by around 15% when excavated, so would most likely need taken of site, or spread around.
Just an option that might just suit somebody or not

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
In my garden it would fill with water! The water table is about 6" down and we're on a bed of river clay!! Dunno about the bulk, but the stuff' blasted heavy and mean to dig too!

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
The totes are definately strong enough to bear a 20" front wheel. To be honest the rears are so bl00dy big and heavy that you need to hoist them up with both hands so I didn't get a chance to try out the breaking strain on the handles on those 2. Rears with tyre weigh around 40kgs and fronts probably closer to low 30s. Happily bore the weight of the fronts without signs of strain on the stitching.
Clas Ohlson (sp?) do a set of 4 for 15 quid but doubt they would be up to the job.

i think it is strong enough to carry it in but as Snipez999 say the rears are fairly big and it would be hard to carry by handle with one hand..would it hold ? yes it would..

Re: Winter / Summer wheel storage
To be honest, it's easier just to roll these wheels in their bags than try to carry them - as long as you don't mind a bit of dirt on the outside
I don't try and lift then at all now (I know the handles are wrecked in mine), as it's just so much easier to roll them - they're wheels after all
