2004 X5 3l Sport squeaking rear!
Just had car back after new rear bumper fitted but since returning it has developed a very loud squeaking everytime you drive. Even on a normal road surface. Just the kids getting in and out will make it squeak. Any ideas before we take it to garage?

Bushes is possibly the answer....but which ones??? my guess would be rear anti roll bar bushes, complete speculation on my part mind. I had this way back and changed said bushes which resolved the problem. It sounded like a complete knacker reversing up my drive squeaking away

Something has obviously been disturbed on jacking up and down ...god luck with the brakes btw they are more important than squeaks

its the rear ball joints that give the squeaking 90% of the time m8

Hi,
I had same fault last year on the rear axle. I found a rubber casing which i pinpricked with a needle and syringed some WD40 into it. 1 year on still no problem. Hope this may help in some way

I tnink you are optimistic expecting a squeak diagnosis on a forum albeit many of us will have rear squeak experiences to share.
Moving on then & keeping it clean.....
If it wasnt doing it before & you are sure of this then I think you should 1st look into the rear bumpler fitment as the likely suspect here.
Fwiw my rear squeaks/nosies have been down to :
1) One of the rubber/plastic caps being missing on the (female) tailgate catch that sits inside the aperture in the lower tailgate & where the upper (male) catch should strike & bite them.
2) Bump stops in gutters to upper tailgate needed adjusting by turning. (ideally a sheet of paper will bite but drag between these and the upper contactr points)
3) Parcel shelf not located properly.
4) Loose items in boot/cubby/tyre well.
But my money is on the rear bumper, it's fittings, surroundings or as stated something being disturbed when it was fitted.
Keep it simple- take it back to who fiied it ( asuming someone else did so), & tell them they bhave caused the problem. it will give thenm hours of fun.
Good Luck
Oh & btw - Welcome If & when you get a chance, (& hopefully if so motivated), then pop over to newbies section say Hi.
Good Luck

Thanks AW8 will try to go to newbie part later.
Def not parcel shelf as from the inside you can't hear a thing....just everyone on the outside that can hear it.
Thought the turning heads were admiring looks reminicent of the days she was new, lol. But alas no.........it's the very loud squeak.
Will speak to guy that fitted bumper see if he will take a look.
Thanks all.

As already mentioned rear lower balljoint is a well known cause of an "external" creak.

I would say rear balljoint as this was the same issue I had earlier in the year after jacking up the near side rear. I took the old one out to find it was in pieces. If you're not too far from Wolves then Incan change it for you as I've got the BMW tool to get them in/out with.

I have exactly the same problem.
When you rock the car it literaly sounds like someone is humping on an old metal frame bed!
Got the wife to rock it as I prodded about underneath and it is defiantly coming from the rear suspension somewhere but I cant quite pinpiont where.
Going to get it up on the ramp and give it a proper check soon.

That's definitely the rear balljoint.

Thanks Raj.
I’m working away at the moment but will be looking to change both rear balljoints when I get back.
My mates a mechanic all be it a fairly agricultural one.
I know you need a special tool to change the balljoints but I’m pretty sure when I mention this to him he will tell me he can do the job without it.
Do you think this is possible???
Also will I need to do the alignment when I have changed them?
Cheers
Dave
