Parking heater remote start- Enabling

Post by dirtymonkey29 » Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:22 pm

Does anyone have hot air blowing out using either aux heating on obc or via 12v to pin one... I need to work out why I'm getting no heat in the cabin... Wondering if I have a faulty thermostat or if additional hoses and water valves are needed on a facelift E53

Mine is a 2004 facelift , if i put a live to pin 1the the heater fires up and i get warm air in the cabin, have you looked to see if your water is returning in your header tank when you run the heater? it should do,

Parking heater remote start- Enabling

Post by dirtymonkey29 » Thu Oct 20, 2011 10:42 pm

On a side note and unsure if it's normal or possibly related.... After driving to work this afternoon I was fairly early so I sat watching tv in the car park for half an hour... After driving 30-40 mins the temp gauge was not far off being in the centre of the gauge but was slightly towards the cold side. I left the engine running and set the temp to 21c and set the vents on the 3rd red dot, fan speed just over half speed and it didn't feel all that warm while I was stationary. When I finished work and was on the drive home it was blowing hot and I had to turn the temp down.

Parking heater remote start- Enabling

Sounds about right that. Most diesels are very heat efficient nowadays so will not generate enough heat at idle to warm everything up especially when you are trying to take all the heat via the blower, hence the Webasto to help heat the engine from cold.

Could be why the bugger won't warm up when put 12v through pin 1 then. I'll save the money I was gonna spend on the gsm unit then

Bit more digging while im at work. I have a thermo top Z fitted which is almost the same as a thermo top C except the C has an additional "circulation" pump fitted the the actual webasto. I assume this pump circlates the hot water around the heater matrix while the usual pump just circulates it around the block. There is a kit available which includes this circulation pump and a timer to enable the thrmotop Z to be used as an auxillary heater and park heater. Just wonder if a fitting kit is also required. Found the below website useful:

Still working on it.
Info from Webasto Doncaster: Upgrade kit part number 89247D, comes with water pump (circulates coolant through matrix), water pump adaptor, 1hour timer kit, harness, formed hose(i assume to go from circulation pump into heater matrix), clamps, electrical connectors. Price £296.45 Forgot to ask if that was inc vat...doh. links below are for further reading as im at work and cant email back to home at the moment but others may find helpful.

Hi,
I fitted a remote start ( Maplins relay ) to my X5 ( 2005 ) when I first got it, it worked a treat for the first winter with nice warm air blowing into the cab.
Last winter though the heater started playing up, it would try to start but would not fire up & when it operated on starting the engine ( when ambiant was cold enough ) the webasto fan would go on & off & eventually shut down.
I had the whole unit replaced under warranty last November & it's been fine since, I tried it the other morning ( first frost of the Winter) & still all ok although it has yet to fire up when starting the engine ( probably not been cold enough yet )
One point worth checking, I may be wrong but I'm sure you need to set the heater controls a particular way in order for it to heat the cab properly ?
I can't check at the moment as the Wife is out in the car & the manual is in there.
Will check when she comes home & report back.
Phil.

Any info you can provide will be appreciated. How are you getting heat into the heater matrix?

Hi,
I checked to owners manual the vent position only applies to aux vent not aux heat. ( I knew I'd read something )
Sorry can't be more help.
I presume you know it will not operate if battery voltage is too low, the ambient temp is above 16 degrees or the fuel is on reserve ?
Regards, Phil
P.S. to cenfirm I do not have the OBD timer function & have not fitted any other parts for the heater to operate other then a remote relay.
