3.0D or 4.0D ??

Post by 5wany » Wed Oct 19, 2011 6:07 am

Waiting on a couple dealers getting back to me on new e70. Decided that M Sport best model for me (us when I talk to the wife ;) ).

Not sure if single or twin turbo version though.

Did the math on increased bhp taking into account for the extra e70 weight (bhp to weight ratio) (current e70's verses 218bhp e53)
245bhp 3.0D works out at an 8% improvement.
306 bhp 4.0D works out at a 35% improvement over my e53

Torque was increased 500N(e53) to 540(3.0D) & 600(4.0D)

Now I never felt my e53 was a slouch and easily propeled me to 100mph with ease then oomph did tail of.

So is e70 3.0D 245bhp adequate ? or is having the 4.0D 306bhp gonna make me cream with pleasure every time I drive it ?

At a 2.5k increase I can't help but think of the extra toys I could add, which also adds to the enJOYment of the car.
ummmmmm.......

What do others think, chip in please. (Also is BMW buisness radio upgrade worth it?, personally I couldn't tell an C sharp from F Flat).

You have to try for yourself as the single turbo maybe fine for you

I however are on my second twin turbo and I like the low down grunt as much as the top end - just find the twin that more drivable and relaxed

I test drove the single turbo, and it felt a lot slower than the E53, so I could not live with it.

Not sure about the on paper increase in power, but on the road it translated into a slower feeling car (obviously, could have been just that particular car but I could not live with that).

I have the 40d, and never actually test drove the 30d. I don't race around, but love the surge you get with the power and torque. First time I gave it a bit of welly I found it surreal to be propelled forward so fast in a car that your mind tells you is very large and heavy so should be slow. For me it was a no brainer and I thought the extra performance to be very good value (plus you get bigger brakes). It obviously depends on your priorities. If that surging forward doesn't do anything for you then don't bother. Another factor that you may want to build in is economy. The 37mpg combined figures quoted for the 40d are sheer make believe - I don't know how they get away with it. I generally get high 20s. I understand however that the 30d is quite a lot more frugal. Again, I don't do that many miles using public transport to and from work, so it's not a major factor for me. I'm very happy to have the 40d and know I'd be regretting it if I had the 30d. But that's me ...

I got a 40d in July and have been getting over 30mpg with a peak of 31.7 - and I don't drive like a pensioner!! I did test driver the 30d but in my opinion the twin turbo is much more flexible and scarily fast, especially if you put the auto box in sport mode...

Good points made.

Did realise about bigger brakes today, so thats a positive thing to consider, that extra stopping power just might save you one day ;)

Like the chrome grill as well as 3.0D gets black vertical slats.

Was at dealers today going through spec and have nearly convinced myself of 3.0D with couple other bits of spec. But now......... :?

Cheers guys ;)

another dealer close by has got a 4.0D in and think I will test drive back 2 back with 3.0D. Would hate to spend that kind of cash and always have a niggling doubt about it.

I've got the 40d, didn't get a chance to test drive before i bought but since been in both neither car will feel like a slouch and both an improvement on the e53, with the 8 speed box both feel very smooth relative to the e53.

Which means when they need new ones they cost that much more - destroyed my front disks in less than 30k

You can buy them quite cheap if you need to - my neighbour has on their one to try and keep up with me !

Going into one of the dealers tomorrow to test drive both 30D / 40D back 2 back. So will be able to decide what one's for me by then.

3.0D or 4.0D ??

Post by Rusty » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:14 am

When I test drove the E53 back to back with the E70 3.0d, I would say the E70 was a tad quicker, but doesn't nessacerily mean that it feels quicker. Let me explain.
The E53 having only a 6 speed (facelift) auto box compared with the ever so silky 8 speed on the E70 means that the engine sounds like it's working harder between changes where the E70 appears to sound less 'harsh' ( for want of a better word ) so gives the impression of not pushing on as fast.

That said, the E70 is also quite a bit bigger with even bigger mirrors so the whole psychological 'can't be going fast' does come into it.

All in, if I were in your position, I would get the twin. As others have put already, the extra shove with the 40 is Something only you can appreciate when you have a go, and go on, scare the sales guy.

Well had my test drives;
40d on 20" rims (9,000miles) & 30D on 19"(950miles)

IMHO the 30D drove better :? Must be the wheels as both cars had sport suspension.

For mr the 30D is quick enough, sure the 40D beats it, but I don't think I'd use the extra power all that often compared to the extra spec I could add/use for the same cost.
Took both cars out m/way & country roads, tried flooring them from standing start, mid range kick down and everyday trundle along. The 40D will change up at 2,000rmp under normal conditions where the 30D around 1850rpm (which suited me better). Both obiously kick down well and hold onto revs as required. And both pass pretty much anything else on the road with ease ;)

Against my old e53, given I sold it back in Feb, the 30D is still a good improvement, & 8sp box makes all the difference. Though can't understand why BMW have waited until now to add paddle shift to diesel MSports.

So decided it will be 30d on 19"

Rebuilt car at dealers though they would not move on discount / deal offered earlier in week, so ofto A.N.Other dealers that's heavily competing for my business.
