I saw a renault wind today.,. Trouble with these "Eco friendly" electric cars is the power that it takes to charge them comes from power stations, plus the range and time it takes to charge them

I had my x5 4.4 converted to lpg last July and so far have covered 36000 trouble free miles at 30mpg . The conversion cost Â£1850 which is more than offset by the savings .

My experience with LPG on a Mercedes estate is ther is not much difference in the running cost on diesel or LPG,
The diesel does more per litre then LPG but LPG is cheap, so it generally all balances out.
LPG can be difficult to find, the fuel tank is often small and depending on the car and installation there is a greater risk of fire in a collision

My support for diesel, you could find your fuel anywhere, the range on my X is 500+ miles,diesel engines are very reliable and robust
and tend to last a lot longer than a petrol engine before needing a rebuilt, modern diesel engines have great performance,
the vehicle will hold its value much better.

Lots of talk these days about hydrogen cars, but that's a conversation for another year

On the other hand maybe you believe that any PLG installation is safe, think again and look at these two links.

Before this turns into a full scale argument, I'm sure if you have a proper conversion done and it is fully tested regularly, then you will probably be okay.
But if you are buying one that has been done by someone else, watch out and have it checked properly before you purchase

I'm not going to get into an argument about this because I don't have enough info on it...

All i'll say is that I very much doubt there is a greater risk of fire in a collision. A standard fuel tank would fail before an LPG tank and LPG tanks are basically mini pressure vessels so would withstand a great deal of force. A rear collision in an X5 you would be hard pushed to damage the wheel well - and if you did it would probably spit the LPG tank out into the boot space.

Just to be pedantic and based on no knowledge whatsoever.......... a car with both petrol tank AND lpg tank has to be at slightly higher risk of fire/explosion, even if it's marginal. Wouldn't put me off though... still thinking about doing this 3 years in!
